Today is the big day! All of the lessons, studying and practicing are coming to a crescendo! The only item left to do before the concert is to select the flowers to be presented on stage to our conductor. Tulips? Roses? Sunflowers? Lilies? Decisions, decisions! Selecting a mixed bouquet would certainly ensure that she would receive her favorite flowers! She grew up summering at the beach, hanging around with the seagulls as her parents watched her from underneath their striped beach umbrella, not far back in the sand from the lifeguard's chair. A budding student of the ocean, she does not hesitate to challenge the seagulls as they dive into the surf for their next meal . . . the baitfish! Her feet are solidly planted in the ocean floor as the undertow grabs her and the baitfish with each wave, in this original, figurative, marine landscape. The turquoise and kelly green waters are radiant as the white tide plays off of the seagulls. The thrill of traversing the beautiful spring countryside rushes color to their cheeks, tightens their calves, lowers their heels and steadies their hands as they ready for the hunt. The horn is sounded, the hounds begin chase and the riders reassure their horse while urging them forward. The scent of the fox, the chase, the jumping across the creeks and over downed branches has come to an end for another equestrian hunt shared with the other highly regarded club members. They walk their horses for a while as the horses and hounds cool down and the riders are waiting on brandy to mellow out the day's excitement. The woman has short hair and is wearing a lovely lavender colored blouse, and she is surrounded by lush greenery with a cluster of grapes growing on the vine in the background. A mid-century Philadelphia artist and art educator active in the 1960’s, Sol Jasner taught art classes alongside his contemporary Philadelphia artist Martin Zipin.

Portrait of a Italian woman by American impressionist painter David Rosenthal (American, 1876-1949), c. 1900. Estate stamp on verso. Image, 11"H x 17.5"L. David Rosenthal was a Cincinnati artist who was known as an American Impressionist. He studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati with Frank Duveneck, Lewis Meakin, and Joseph Henry Sharp. After finishing, Rosenthal traveled to Munich to study with G. Flad and Azbe and exhibited at the Kuenstler Verein. He won a scholarship at the Belle Arts in Rome, became a member of the Cirelo Internationale, and continued his studies at the Academy of Milan in Florence. During his extended residence in Europe, Rosenthal moved in artistic circles from Munich to Rome. Several European sketchbooks still exist from this time, and show the skillful facility fostered by his academic background. Italian and German landscape scenes figure prominently in his early oils, which are dated around 1890 and designate Italian cities and towns on the back of canvases. Some of his etchings from a later period are probably based on earlier European sketches...

Bay area estate sale find. Gordon Cook was born in 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington where he received his B.F.A in 1950. Cook then went on to study fundamentals and life drawing at The American Academy of Art* in Chicago. The same year he studied intaglio* printmaking with Vera Berdich at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago*. He took graduate courses and continued studying intaglio printmaking under artist Mauricio Lasansky at the State University of Iowa. In 1951, Cook moved to San Francisco. Soon after his works received the journeyman's card in International Typographical Union, Local 21. He began exhibiting his prints, drawings, and paintings at the Porpoise Gallery in San Francisco. Four years later, Cook became a charter member of the Bay Printmakers Society and exhibited in their annual exhibitions at the Oakland Art Museum for the next five years. His etchings portrayed mainly San Francisco landscapes such as the Golden Gate Park, Diamond Heights, and Lake Merced as well as flowers, especially roses. He participated in his first weekly drawing group with artist Alvin Light, Manuel Neri, Joan Brown, and William H. Brown. Cook also taught at the San Francisco Art Institute*. His etchings where exhibited in a one-man exhibition at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, in the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts. At this point Cook returned to painting.
