Nie Jian Bing’s artwork offers a twist on classic portraiture by challenging how we look at historical figures and images of the Renaissance. The artwork begins with a highly recognizable Western portrait, on which he superimposes a grid of asymmetrical acupuncture meridians and Chinese characters. The West, as seen through the eyes of the East.
Framed size is 80.50 x 62 inches.
Both this painting and his other portrait of Margarita are appropriated from paintings by Diego Velazquez, Court painter to Philip IV of Spain (1605-1665). Philip was married twice, his first wife was Elizabeth of France and second wife was Maria Anna of Austria.
Margareta Teresa was Marianna and Philip’s daughter. She was betrothed to Leopold l, Holy Roman Emperor (Austria) her uncle. Working in the Baroque style, Velazquez painted the Infanta Margarita many times as a young child. These portraits were records of how she grew through her childhood and were sent to Leopold before their marriage. The Baroque style was considered more a realistic, emotional and humanist way of painting.
Margareta is also the central figure in the famous Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez. Created four years before his death, it serves as an outstanding example of European baroque art.
Nie Jian Bing divides his time between Paris and Montreal. His work has been included in many major exhibitions in North America, Europe and China.
