About the Item

Norman Rockwell 1894-1978 American Tender Years: Moth Holes Signed "Norman Rockwell" (lower right) Oil on canvas From Norman Rockwell's acclaimed Four Seasons calendar series for Brown & Bigelow, Tender Years: Moth Holes represents the artist's masterful exploration of mature American relationships and his unparalleled ability to transform ordinary domestic moments into profound artistic narratives. This 1957 painting displays Rockwell's sentimental commitment to celebrating the "charms and comforts of maturity" during an era obsessed with youth. The composition presents a couple discovering the unfortunate fate of their stored seasonal clothing, with the husband displaying his moth-riddled red long underwear while his wife examines the damage with resigned familiarity. Rockwell's meticulous attention to detail manifests in every element: the weathered wooden trunk with its brass fittings, the scattered moths dancing above the scene, the couple's expressive faces and the comfortable acceptance that comes with decades of shared domestic trials. The careful rendering of textures—from the soft wool of the sweaters to the worn leather of the trunk—demonstrates Rockwell's technical virtuosity at every turn. Norman Rockwell stands as America's most beloved illustrator, whose work transcended commercial art to become a defining visual narrative of 20th-century American life. His Brown & Bigelow calendar series (1948-1964) ranks alongside his Saturday Evening Post covers as works that elevated him from celebrated illustrator to national institution. Rockwell's extraordinary ability to find profound meaning in everyday moments earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977, the highest civilian honor bestowed upon American citizens. His art, characterized by meticulous detail and emotional depth, captures the essence of the American spirit with an authenticity that continues to resonate across generations. Museums worldwide, including the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, preserve and celebrate his legacy as an artist who documented American values, aspirations and the tender moments that unite us all. Gum Kids
By Leslie Thrasher
Located in New Orleans, LA
Two young children play an ill-advised game of gum stretching on the family couch in this charming composition by famed American illustrator, Leslie Thrasher. Painted towards the start of the Great Depression, Thrasher provided light-hearted images of the lives of everyday people to distract Americans from their troubles. These images appeared on the covers of Liberty Magazine, for whom he produced one cover illustration a week for six consecutive years. Born in 1889 in Piedmont, West Virginia, Thrasher studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as a teenager and received a scholarship to study art abroad in Paris. Upon his return, he began studying under Howard Pyle, known as the “father of American illustration.” Thrasher sold his first cover illustration to the Saturday Evening Post in 1912, four years before Norman Rockwell’s first Post cover, and he would go on to produce over 360 magazine covers throughout his career. He painted humorous, relatable scenes of life in America with colorful characters set against white backgrounds. He was also a successful commercial artist, painting advertisements for Cream of Wheat, Chesterfield Cigarettes...

Norman Rockwell 'Fondly Do We Remember' 1977, signed & numbered lithograph
By Norman Rockwell
Located in Pembroke Pines, FL
"Fondly Do We Remember" From the Four Ages of Love Suite by Norman Rockwell Media: Lithograph on Paper Image Dimensions: 21" x 22" Year Produced: 1977 Edition Size: 200 Numbered (1-200), 60 Artists Proofs (1-60) Edition Number: A/P (Artist proof) Signed and Numbered in pencil by the artist Condition: In excellent condition Norman Rockwell was an American painter and illustrator known for his iconic depictions of American culture created for The Saturday Evening Post. With a range of favorite subjects that included nuclear families, mischievous children, and small-town life, his work has achieved an iconic status: the 1943 painting of a Thanksgiving dinner, Freedom from Want, has been reproduced and parodied countless times in contemporary culture. As an artist, Rockwell has had a lasting effect on US society beyond any singular work, with his paintings seen as indelible images that went on to inspire American directors such as George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and particularly Robert Zemeckis, whose 1994 film Forrest Gump recreates several of Rockwell’s paintings as scenes throughout the film. Though he enjoyed success throughout his career, Rockwell’s idyllic and sentimental outlook on American society was not necessarily embraced by art critics, though his later politically activist work garnered praise for its tackling of controversial subjects. Born on February 3, 1894 in New York, NY, he went on to study at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. Rockwell notably had a longstanding relationship with the Boy Scouts...
