About the Item
"Elevated" by Obiora Anamaleze is a striking and enigmatic artwork that invites viewers into a world of profound symbolism and contemplation. The central figure, a lady, sits with a blindfold over her eyes, clutching a landline phone in her hand, while two birds gracefully hover by her side, creating a visually compelling narrative.
The blindfold that obscures the lady's vision is a powerful symbol of self-imposed or enforced limitation of perception. It represents the boundaries we place upon ourselves, the things we choose not to see or acknowledge, or those aspects of our reality that remain hidden from us.
The landline phone in her hand adds a touch of nostalgia, harking back to an earlier era. This antiquated communication device suggests a longing for a connection, the desire to reach out and bridge distances, or perhaps to re-establish contact with someone or something from the past.
The two birds that hover by her side provide a stark contrast to the lady's stationary and blindfolded state. Birds often symbolize freedom, transcendence, and the untethered spirit. In this context, they could represent the potential for liberation, a yearning to break free from the constraints of self-imposed limits and to soar above and beyond.
Obiora Anamaleze's "Elevated" is a thought-provoking piece of art that encourages viewers to explore the complex interplay between self-imposed restrictions and the desire for liberation, the past and the present, and the known and the unknown. It serves as a reminder that, like the lady in the artwork, we hold the power to remove the blindfold and connect with the world in new and meaningful ways. The juxtaposition of elements in this composition elevates it to a higher plane of artistic expression, inviting us to contemplate our own journeys toward enlightenment and connection.

About Artist
Obiora Anamaleze was born and raised in Enugu, South-East Nigeria, to a family of five. After his primary and secondary education in Enugu, Obiora moved to the University of Benin, Benin, Edo State where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with a specialization in Painting in 1998, he later obtained a Master of Art and Ph.D. in Fine Arts and Design, with a specialization in Painting from the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State in 2012 and 2017, respectively. He has participated in several exhibitions. Obiora is happily married, he lives and works in Port Harcourt, and enjoys swimming, scrabble, and preaching.
Obiora’s preferred medium is oil and with it, he tries to capture the importance of human emotion and relationships through the synthesis of the three most important aspects of society - children, women, and nature plus other striking moments of human existence. His work aims to counteract a dehumanized society, with inspiration from his childhood memories and innocence. Obiora’s practice is driven by his passion for the African society.
Obiora tries to achieve a synthesis of styles that have influenced him since he began his art practice, like the figurative and realistic styles of master artists like Michelangelo (whose paintings taught him the importance of expression or action in figures) and Leonardo da Vinci, as well as expressionism and traditional African artistic styles. Studying Rembrandt and Goya taught him the dramatic nature of chiaroscuro, its immediate intimacy, and the use of light.
