About the Item
"Ripples" by Obiora Anamaleze is a mesmerizing and thought-provoking artwork that beckons viewers to delve into a world of profound symbolism and contemplation. The central figure, a woman with her back turned to the viewer, stands gracefully beside a tranquil body of water, her waist adorned with an array of diverse waist beads. Two elegant fish swim gracefully around her, creating a visual narrative rich in meaning.
The woman's enigmatic posture, facing away from the viewer, invokes a sense of privacy and introspection. Her choice to turn her back may signify a desire for solitude, a moment of deep personal reflection, or an opportunity to connect with her inner thoughts and emotions.
The waist beads encircling her waist are significant cultural symbols in many African traditions, representing beauty, femininity, and even spiritual significance. The array of colors and designs speaks to the rich tapestry of culture and diversity, highlighting the complexity and depth of the woman's identity.
The two fish, swimming serenely around her, are potent symbols of fertility, abundance, and the ebb and flow of life's experiences. They may also represent the interplay of emotions and thoughts that surround the woman as she stands by the water's edge.
"Ripples" encourages viewers to explore the hidden aspects of an individual's identity, the intricate layers of culture, and the ever-changing flow of thoughts and emotions that shape our existence. The juxtaposition of the woman's contemplative stance, the vibrant waist beads, and the presence of the fish create a composition that prompts us to contemplate the depths of our inner worlds and our connections to the world around us. This artwork is a powerful reminder of the complex and unique layers that define each person, and the ripple effect of their existence on the world.

About Artist
Obiora Anamaleze was born and raised in Enugu, South-East Nigeria, to a family of five. After his primary and secondary education in Enugu, Obiora moved to the University of Benin, Benin, Edo State where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with a specialization in Painting in 1998, he later obtained a Master of Art and Ph.D. in Fine Arts and Design, with a specialization in Painting from the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State in 2012 and 2017, respectively. He has participated in several exhibitions. Obiora is happily married, he lives and works in Port Harcourt, and enjoys swimming, scrabble, and preaching.
Obiora’s preferred medium is oil and with it, he tries to capture the importance of human emotion and relationships through the synthesis of the three most important aspects of society - children, women, and nature plus other striking moments of human existence. His work aims to counteract a dehumanized society, with inspiration from his childhood memories and innocence. Obiora’s practice is driven by his passion for the African society.
Obiora tries to achieve a synthesis of styles that have influenced him since he began his art practice, like the figurative and realistic styles of master artists like Michelangelo (whose paintings taught him the importance of expression or action in figures) and Leonardo da Vinci, as well as expressionism and traditional African artistic styles. Studying Rembrandt and Goya taught him the dramatic nature of chiaroscuro, its immediate intimacy, and the use of light.
