About the Item

A young boy feeding his dove, accompanied by his loyal dog, dated 1765 In this intimate Dutch Old Master painting by P. J. Geerst, dated 1765, a tender moment between a child and his animals comes alive with warmth and quiet symbolism. Seated surrounded by his animals, the young boy reaches into his bag with one hand, while gently steadying a dove with the other, its delicate wing held in his grasp as he prepares to feed it. His expression conveys a mix of care and curiosity, as though this small act of giving is a ritual of affection. Behind him, several doves and downy fledglings gather attentively, their eager eyes fixed on the boy and his prized bird. The artist captures their soft plumage and animated presence with remarkable delicacy, suggesting a sense of community and natural harmony. At the boy’s side, his faithful dog sits watchfully, anchoring the scene with loyalty and quiet devotion. The composition, with its warm earth tones and softened chiaroscuro, radiates tranquility while drawing the viewer into this world of innocence and companionship. More than a simple genre painting, Geerst’s work is a poetic study of youthful tenderness, the bonds of trust between human and animal, and the peaceful rhythms of domestic life in the 18th century. P. J. Geerst was a Dutch artist active in the 18th century, his works are rare. He was a highly accomplished painter often specialising in the depictions of animals, sometimes accompanied by children. The present painting is beautifully signed and dated in the upper right quadrant. Dimensions: with frame 104*83,5 cms oil on canvas 85*64,5 cm Provenance: -With J.F.
