About the Item
In this dramatic painting of a single blossom by Pat Service, the colour palette is rich and bold—burgundy red and deep purple and the texture appears to be velvety soft. Reminiscent of Andy Warhol, Service’s flowers are pared down to the essentials--simple shapes without leaves or stems. An avid gardener, Pat Service has painted florals throughout her career. This is one in a series. Displayed together, these florals make a dynamic statement.
“The flowers with their radiance and intensity initiate the act of putting paint on canvas but they don’t control the result. The result has more to do with the curious act of ‘painting’, playing with hue, surface texture and mark making.” Pat Service
She acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of B.C. and later studied art at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. Service’s work is held in private collections in North America, Britain, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Pat Service
Canadian artist Pat Service has been creating expressive, intensely colourful acrylic paintings for several decades. Born in the small coastal town of Port Alberni on
Vancouver Island, the beautiful, rugged shoreline, mountain vistas and ancient forests influenced both the subject and style of her work. She is known for her ability to capture the subtleties of light as they appear in the sky and water. Her brushstrokes also emulate the textures she observes in nature. Her use of thinned out paint allows for more transparency in colours and is a feature of her work. Service’s subjects are landscapes, florals, animals and still lifes. “Living close to nature for the first 12 years of my life indelibly imprinted on me an identity with trees fields, creeks, lakes, dirt, rocks, the sun, the sky, gardens, plants,
flowers, roads, and so on. Every time I start a new painting I am attempting to honour and seal that connection.”(Pat Service) Service attended the University of British Columbia where she acquired her Bachelor of Arts degree. Her husband’s career took her to Scotland where she attended classes at the Glasgow School of Art. Her early influences were the Scottish artists whose brushwork and colour choices were reminiscent of the popular Post-Impressionist French painters. Service also lived in Eastern Canada and Venezuela but in 1972, the family moved back to Vancouver, B.C. She continued to paint and attended several artist’s workshops in the U.S. and Canada. Following numerous experiences at the renowned Emma Lake Professional Artist Workshops in Saskatchewan, (where she met a community of abstract painters including Milly Ristvedt), Service began to change her approach to her work. Traditional landscapes gave way to a more liberated, abstract style in colour and form. “Working side by side with abstract artists, I began to envy their freedom to invent colour relationships and focus on mark making. The energy and excitement that comes with that kind of innovation, I wanted some of that. Up to then, I had worked closer to nature, not in a very detailed way but my work always had a clear reference to the real world. Now I began to liberate myself from that close connection and trust the casual references that can evoke a world of its own.” (Pat Service) She has exhibited widely throughout Canada and internationally. Service’s paintings are in numerous private, corporate collections and several museum collections around the world.

"Princess Champaign Poppy" Contemporary Mixed Media Floral Painting on Canvas
By Antoinette Ferwerda
Located in New York, NY
This painting by Antoinette is a stylish and luxurious mixed media on canvas piece depicting abstract floral shapes with bold use of color and contrast. The Silver Leaf background allows for the luminosity to shine through effortlessly, as the lines and intricate details of the silk paper laid over paint and mixed media add a most interesting texture. The artist's hand embellishes with free fall paint dripping to add elegant accents. This painting comes housed in a natural oak floater frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.
Art measures 31.5 x 31.5 inches
Frame measures 33 x 33 inches
Antoinette Ferwerda is a renowned Australian artist largely recognized for producing a bold collection of fine artwork that joyfully explores the geometry of shape and the changing light from dusk to dawn. Championing her love for shape, reflection, and nature using a diverse pallet of mixed media to portray her abstract interpretations of nature. Antoinette's diverse past and a childhood that was somewhat nomadic has inspired much of her work today. Antoinette’s backstory reads like something out of an adventure series, having spent her early days living in remote pockets of Papua New Guinea, where she was lucky to spend time in a seaside shack on Ela Beach in Port Moresby, as well as the volcanic town of Rabaul, the Cargo Port Lae, before moving on to Darwin where her Dad worked for the Red Cross and helped with the re-build process after Cyclone Tracy. This was followed by a family stint in Europe, visiting Netherlands, London, Belgium, France, Italy, and Switzerland, before finally settling back in Melbourne for her formative years.
Her love for nature and exploring the patterns and relationships she finds within started early. “I’ve been forever fascinated with color and the magical interplay of light”. “Blessed to have a teacher Mum who fostered regular creative time during our nomadic stint, my childhood was largely spent creating, especially outdoors”. Never without a pen, sketchbook or scraps of paper, her natural ability to create in layers instinctively started in these early years. Although her work continues to evolve, she consistently creates works that are rich in layers, resulting in pieces that are optimistic, luminous and full of stories from her colorful life.
Her signature work is abundant with color and texture, resulting in a transparent quality of her works. Adaptable to any palette, Antoinette has produced works from a diversity of spectrums and mediums – sun-soaked, muted and ethereal, vibrant, as well as monochromatic with accents of gold. Her themes include abstract and metaphysical interpretations of fossicking in rock pools, exploring the rolling hills of the countryside both here and abroad, the rock formations of the Australian outback and the magical light of a European summer to name just a few. Her dream and longing to become an artist became a reality after starting her own family and farewelling a corporate life in the pharmaceutical industry, with her debut solo exhibition in 2014.
Six years on, Antoinette has fast become a firm favorite amongst interior designers, stylists and home decorators alike, having been represented by fenton&fenton, Thom Gallery and Trit House (formally Click On Furniture) to name just a few. Continually experimenting and evolving as an artist, Antoinette invites the viewer to look deeper through surface layers to find hidden stories of color and form. Past collections have been inspired by visits to the bustling markets of India, the morning light outside her childhood beach shack...
