About the Item

Art historian Gerald Schurr describes the artist Paul Michel Dupuy in his book Les Petits Maitres de la Peinture as “a painter of plein-air, of movement and children’s play.” Certainly the artist chose subjects with universal appeal which accounts for his ever increasing popularity. Dupuy’s charming compositions of mother and child, children frolicking and beach scenes are painted with a loose brushstroke and a fresh palette of pure and cheerful colors. The bright white, splashes of red, and vivid blue, all enhanced by crisp sunlight, bring these subjects to life as seen in the charming work Jeune Femme a l’ombrelle et son enfant. Many such views were taken from Parisian parks, near the artist’s abode, especially the Luxembourg Gardens, the Tuileries and the Jardin d’Acclimation, and in the beautiful South of France. Dupuy was a pupil at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts under the famous masters Léon Bonnat and Albert Maignan. He began painting genre works, marines and portraits. Dupuy became a member of the Societaire des Artists Français in 1899, exhibiting annually at the Salon from this date. He won numerous medals and ultimately was awarded Chevalier of the Legion of Honneur in 1933. During his career, Dupuy also traveled widely. His visits to Normandy, Basque, Belgium, Spain, Venice allowed varied exposure to many picturesque locales. Much of this inspiration later appeared on canvas.
