Paul Rossi
Metaphysical Still-Life Contemporary Oil Painting

2018

About the Item

I work in oils, goauche, charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, and less frequently, in acrylic and watercolour. My work takes a figurative approach to space and tends to revolve around the exploration of the Western pictorial tradition, most particularly, the painters of early modernism, especially Picasso, and the Italian Metaphysical school of approximately the same years, represented by Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carra. I feel that the themes and proccupations which inform the lives and works of these artists has much to say to us in the early 21st century. They were acutely conscious of the character of the emerging 20th century world, but they also had a deep and lively awareness of the perennial value of the classical and mediterranean world. They experienced and thought about this world as a spiritual condition, and as an abiding presence in Western consciousness. My own work tries to reflect in some way this sense of the need for engagement both with tradition, the past - and with the present moment. Oil on canvas, signed and framed Image 35.25" x 23.25"

This painting was inspired by the artists very first toy, a small blue giraffe, given to her as a day-old baby. It is something that has been around her whole life, and even though it is inanimate, there is a feeling of personification through the years of wear. Her brother as a baby would call giraffes “fa,” which is always a sweet memory she associate with this toy. Samantha Van Heest...

Shit happens sometimes. In this piece, the artist wanted to create an unsettling and claustrophobic space where people feel most private and vulnerable. Inspired by artist Tala Madani, she created a cartoon figure to act as the voyeur, a bright and unwelcome disturbance that cannot be ignored. Samantha Van Heest...
