Paulus Bor (1605-1669), was a Dutch artist who was both a representative of the “Golden Age” (Dutch Golden Age painting) and a member of the art society "Bentvueghels". The Bentvueghels was a society of Dutch and Flemish artists active in Rome from about 1620 to 1720. He was born and died in Amersfoort, a city in the Netherlands, and was a member of a wealthy family. He arrived in Rome towards the beginning of the third decade of the 17th century and remained there until 1626. During his stay in Rome, he founded the Bentvueghels, together with other artists. This beautiful panel depicts a theme investigated many times in the first half of the 17th century; that of the philosophers Heraclitus and Democritus. As we can see from the painting, the two philosophers react very differently to the vicissitudes of human beings and the world. While one cries and despairs, the other laughs about it. The two philosophers are also usually portrayed alongside a globe, but in this case Bor decided to replace the usual globe with a large map. The entire surface of the painting presents beautiful plays of light.

The present painting is a very interesting testimony of the creative process of Matteo Bonechi, one of the leading artists on the Tuscan art scene in the early 18th century. The canvas in question is in fact the last preparatory model made by Bonechi before he executed an altarpiece for the church of San Filippo Neri in Cortona in 1716. The scene presented here is that of the Presentation of Jesus, when, forty days after his birth, the child is ransomed through an offering in the temple and placed in the hands of Simeon, who prophesies his future: the coming of the Messiah...

Hercules and Omphale, Old Master Painting, Mannerism, Baroque, Mythology, Prague
Located in Greven, DE
Hercules and Omphale
Oil on panel, 52 x 41 cm
According to legend, Hercules had to make atonement and became a slave to the Lydian queen Omphale. When she found out who her slave was, she married him. Falling for his mistress and made effeminate by the luxury of court life, the former hero allowed himself to become the laughing stock of the court. He dressed in women's clothes, spun wool and did other women's work, whereas Omphale wore his lion's skin and carried a wooden club. When the time of punishment was over, the hero realised his delusion and left Omphale.
So far, the painting could not be clearly assigned to an artist. Nevertheless, it impresses with its fluid and convincing painting, whose colourfulness and conception are reminiscent of the Prague School around Bartholomäus Spranger.
This work follows an engraving and an etching made by Michel Dorigny in 1643 after a design by Simon Vouet. It shows the same scene but the print differs in minor details from the present painting (see e.g. the head of the lion) and the treatment of the faces seems to be painted more detailed and refined.
So far there is no painting...
