About the Item

Title: Family Scene with Guitarist Artist: Pedro Creixams (Barcelona, 1893 - 1965) Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 39.4 x 31.9 inches (unframed) Signature: Signed lower right "Creixams" Condition: Very good Detailed Description: This painting by Pedro Creixams captures an intimate family scene imbued with warmth and emotional depth. In the foreground, a man plays the guitar with a relaxed, blissful expression, surrounded by two female figures who observe tenderly, reflecting a sense of complicity and care. One of the women gently holds a baby whose curious gaze is directed at the viewer. The composition, filled with dynamism and movement, highlights Creixams' characteristic spontaneity, achieving a balanced interplay of color and emotion. The style is notably expressive, distinguished by swift, free brushstrokes and energetic gestures that echo the spirit of European Modernism. Biographical Note: Pedro Creixams was an influential Catalan painter, born in Barcelona in 1893 and deceased in 1965. His artistic career was notably connected to Paris during the 1920s and 1930s, actively contributing to the School of Paris—a group that included some of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Creixams was particularly recognized for his skill in depicting lively everyday scenes with remarkable sensitivity, sharing stylistic affinities with Pablo Picasso, with whom he maintained a close friendship and artistic connection. Like Picasso, Creixams was engaged in innovative artistic circles and absorbed influences from Cubism and Expressionism, creating a uniquely recognizable visual language. Relationship with Pablo Picasso: Pedro Creixams maintained a close relationship with Pablo Picasso, sharing friendships, exhibitions, and gatherings within Parisian cultural circles. Picasso's influence is evident in Creixams' work through his expressive portrayal of figures, compositional vitality, and bold use of color. This connection significantly enriched Creixams' artistic vision, enabling him to develop a distinctive style that distinguished him within the School of Paris. Related International Artists: Creixams can be contextualized internationally alongside other prominent modern masters with whom he shares stylistic and thematic similarities, notably: Pablo Picasso (Spain/France): For his expressionism, compositional spontaneity, and emotionally charged portrayals. Marc Chagall (Russia/France): For his sensitivity to intimate and family-oriented scenes, as well as vivid, poetic use of color. Chaïm Soutine (Belarus/France): For his expressive brushwork and emotional depth in representation. Maurice de Vlaminck (France): For the vibrancy and energy of his brushstrokes and emotional engagement with depicted subjects. This painting by Pedro Creixams is a notable example of Catalan Expressionism, also serving as an important link to understanding the School of Paris and its cross-influences with Picasso and other international masters.

'Concert', San Francisco Bay Area Expressionist Oil, National Academy, Guitarist
By Martin Snipper
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Initialed lower left, 'M.S.' for Martin Snipper (American, 1914-2009) and dated 1952. Additionally signed, verso, 'Martin Snipper' and dated on stretcher bar. Artist photo courtesy of The Lost Art Salon. This Expressionist and Bay Area Figurative painter, mixed media artist, and sculptor was born in New York City in 1914 and grew up in Los Angeles. During the Great Depression, he rode the rails back to New York with just $5 in his pocket to attend the National Academy of Art, where he met his first wife. Snipper applied to the academy twice to ensure he would be accepted: once under his given name and once under his mother's maiden name. When he was accepted as Martin Snipper, he adopted the name permanently. In addition to his career as a fine artist, Snipper became a foundational figure in the development of the San Francisco Bay Area art movement of the 1960's and 1970's. Snipper remains a legendary figure in San Francisco, both for boldly expanding the Arts Commission during his tenure as Executive Director (1967-1980), and for helping shepherd the Neighborhood Arts Program into existence over 40 years ago. His innovative grass-roots approach inspired similar programs in cities across the United States while San Francisco's own program continues to bring writers into public schools, oversee the city's publicly owned cultural centers, and fund art programs and events. "He took the commission from being a sleepy operation ... and transformed arts in this town to a place it had never been before," said Stephen Goldstine, who ran the Neighborhoods Art Program under Mr. Snipper and later became president of the San Francisco Art Institute. "He was a person of unusual vitality - into his 90s he was still driving his truck to a stone yard...
