About the Item
IT'S NEW is a classic Canadiana painting in postmodern style by Peter Husband, with acrylic paint and oil pastel on stretched canvas. It measures 40 x 30". What began as an experiment for the artist – to gather on one canvas the outdoor activities he loves, the cottage life he loves, the country he loves – turned into a successful series of Canadiana paintings. Playful juxtapositions abound – a birch bark canoe, a fishing lure, eggs in a frying pan and a vintage Canadian postage stamp with Maple leaf, to name a few.
Of course the details enrich the experience. The "J-stroke" is an actual canoe stroke – if you want to canoe in a straight line you use the j-stroke. If you're an avid canoeist, you likely know. If you're not, you will still enjoy the fact that the harkening to tradition and the great outdoors is intentional and intrinsic to the artist's project. "1867" is the year of Canadian confederation. The bird on a branch is represented in the Woodland Style, an indigenous First Nations painting practice. Peter Husband cites the artist Goyce Kakegamic as an inspiration for this wholly invented bird (part owl, part loon).
Exploration is a major part of Canada's history. The artist's research led him to the early birchbark canoes of First Nations peoples and the European explorers. Of course both cultures used stars to navigate, hence the Big Dipper at top right of the canvas. While these details are compelling, it's the entirety of the painting that delivers its distinctive charm. Nearly twenty different visual elements are arranged in a relaxed, casual manner. Without a hint of contrivance, the artist is presenting a Canadian landscape and a Canadian history in a very modern framework.
Peter Husband is a self-taught Canadian artist with equal passion in the worlds of technology, the great outdoors and cottage life, and Canadiana. His paintings are in collections in Canada, the United States and Mexico. A solo show of his work will be presented by Gagné Contemporary gallery in Toronto, Canada in 2023.

"Alas" is an acrylic painting with litho crayon, ink and collage elements on paper, measuring 36" high by 24" wide. It is one of 50 portraits that comprise Profiles in Democracy. Savage in their execution, they are nevertheless heartfelt expressions from the artist – politically, socially, culturally – in some cases featuring text and language in the portrait.
From Dale Williams: "Profiles in Democracy is a group of 50 portraits completed in 2019. They are an expression of sorrow at the fracturing ideals that our country now teeters upon. The portraits are mostly – not exclusively – imaginary: a populace viewed from the inside out, people that someone like our current president might call losers. They perhaps “live in gaudy poverty, powerful destitution,” to quote Osip Mandelstam...
