About the Item
DESCRIPTION
This painting confronts the art world's prejudice towards age. The book on the table is a copy of James Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. The seated figure is meant to convey the image of a poet who hasn't achieved their goals and is no longer a young man”. The figure is viewed from above and sits looking into the distance, the highlight on the wall becomes a crude cloud, a symbol for a dream, the perspective alters as the table is viewed. On the table is an empty notebook, a filling ashtray. A cat pulls at the man's leg for attention, adding a breath of levity to the piece but also showing added responsibilities that come with age. The white of cat helps balance the white of the "cloud", the lines of the blank notebook are carved into the paint. Overflowing ashtray shows he has been sitting for a good deal of time with a blank page in front of him. Necklace is from the book "The Little Prince" it's the illustration the boy draws of a snake swallowing an elephant, which has become a symbol for the idea of maintaining one’s sense of imagination and wonder as we age.

Peter Lupkin
The artwork I create is a visual response to my upbringing and influences. My work is a combination of historical symbolism and modern experience. Historical symbolism has been indoctrinated into my visual language through an apprenticeship into a multi generational stained glass studio at the age of 14 and continuing to the present day. With this as a background language I embrace modern concerns, methods and techniques and seek to connect my own experiences with contemporary society.
