About the Item
One of the key lessons we can glean from the myth of Sisyphus is the importance of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. Sisyphus was condemned to an eternity of ceaseless toil, yet he continued to push the boulder up the hill, in spite of it rolling back down each time. According to French philosopher Albert Camus, the struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. Simply put, he had something to keep him busy. Artist Peter Lupkin gathers all of that into this modern portrayal of Sisyphus. His heavy paint, textured surface and warm palette bring the tale to life. This piece is framed in a simple wooden frame measuring 74h x 50w x 2d inches.

The artwork I create is a visual statement of my moral philosophy. The language I use to convey this philosophy in my pieces is one of traditional symbolism, this being indoctrinated into my personality through an apprenticeship into a traditional stained glass studio at the age of 14 and continuing to the present day. I seek to create scenes and narratives that are at the same time realistic and fantastical. I often use pre-existing stories when I am developing an image. I will then take these narratives and expose a less studied side of them, or try to bring them into a contemporary context.
Ultimately my goal is to use modern imagery in conjunction with traditional techniques and connect them with contemporary society, showing both the narrative’s and the method’s continued relevance.

Peter Lupkin
The artwork I create is a visual response to my upbringing and influences. My work is a combination of historical symbolism and modern experience. Historical symbolism has been indoctrinated into my visual language through an apprenticeship into a multi generational stained glass studio at the age of 14 and continuing to the present day. With this as a background language I embrace modern concerns, methods and techniques and seek to connect my own experiences with contemporary society.

From the artist: "Gender and power are core concepts in my work. I’ve spent two decades in “The Classic City” (Athens, Georgia), surrounded by a dual Greek culture. Fraternities and sororities separate students by gender and play a part in cementing gender roles and power structures for the next generation; ubiquitous Classical architecture (often accompanied by manicured landscape) is a constant reminder of Western ideals.
After a career of painting the female figure and exploring themes related to the male gaze and the lingering inequalities that women face, I’ve focused the past five years on the male figure and his domain. My education was dominated by Western art history, where women were seen as muses; I’m reversing this traditional dynamic between the male artist/intellectual and his female subject.
