Philibert-Leon Couturier
Time Spent in Reconnaissance

Signed lower right, "Léon Couturier" and dated 1887. A substantial oil landscape showing two French cavalry officers engaging in reconnaissance, one leaning against a tree trunk to steady his binoculars, and the other gazing in the same direction, while attendants wait with their horses in the distance. Philibert Léon Couturier first studied with Charles Couturier and, later, with Picot at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, in Paris, to which he was admitted in 1844. He exhibited at the Paris Salon beginning in 1845 and, over the course of a long career, was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. Couturier is represented in the permanent collections of numerous Museums including Montpelier, Reims, Perigeax and Nice, among others. He is well-listed in all major reference works, including Gerald Schur's 'Les Petits Maitres de la Peinture (1820-1920)' and also in Benezit, which gives a signature sample. Reference: Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs, Vol 4, p. 43; Thieme-Becker, Allgemeines Lexikon der Bildenden Kunstler, Vollmer Supplement, Vol. 7/8, p. 8; Davenport’s Art Reference Guide, 2009/10 Edition, p. 640; et al.
