About the Item

After Hector Hyppolite, Philomé Obin may be Haiti's most significant painter. In the present work, Philomé Obin depicts a familiar Haitian street scene with colorful facades and three women in traditional garb. Apparently, they have come out into the street to witness a parade of a single military officer—most likely Toussaint Louverture—on horseback, proudly carrying the newly minted Haitian flag. Street scenes are a recurring theme in Obin's work, and here he connects intercultural mixing with a triumphant moment in Haitian history. The inscription in the center of the painting reads. "Creation of the Haitian flag." Création du drapeau d’Haïti. This work is history painting Haitian style. It celebrates a pivotal moment in Haitian history by incorporating traditional European dress and the officer's military customs alongside the African-inspired dress of the onlookers, creating a uniquely Haitian narrative. As with most Haitian paintings, this work has a thin application of paint because paint is expensive and Haiti is a poor country. Signed Ph.Obin Cap-Haïti (lower right); titled (lower center) oil on Masonite 24 by 30 in. 61 by 76.2 cm. Executed circa 1960.
