Pieter Bout's workshop, Village Festival

18th 18th Century

About the Item

Workshop of Pieter Bout (Brussels, between 1640 and 1645 or 1658 - Brussels, 1719 or 1689) Village party Oil on canvas, 59 x 80 cm With frame 83 x 101 cm This painting, most likely made by the workshop of Pieter Bout, gives us a glimpse of daily life in a Flemish village. The artist, with his ability to capture the essence of a genre scene, transports us to a distant world where simplicity and joie de vivre are the undisputed protagonists. In Bout's works we can detect elements inspired by Flemish painting that we can find in artists such as Jan Brueghel the Elder, also known in Italy as Bruegel of the Velvets (Brussels, 1568 - Antwerp, January 12, 1625). The date of Pieter Bout's birth is uncertain: based on the few known facts it appears to have taken place between 1620 and 1647, but more likely between 1640 and 1645, although he appears to have been baptized on December 5, 1658. The beginning of Bout's period of activity is considered to be 1664, the year of his first dated work, and it is believed that he continued to work until 1719, the year of his last dated work. In 1671 he became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Brussels. Beginning around 1675 he spent three years in Paris, where he often collaborated with Adriaen Frans Boudewijns, including figures in his landscapes. He probably visited Italy in addition to France. Returning to his hometown, he continued his activities. Other artists with whom he collaborated, again including figures in their landscapes, were Lucas Achtschellink, Dupont called Pointié, Ignatius van der Stock, and Jacques d'Arthois. He painted mainly genre scenes, landscapes, particularly seascapes, city views, winter landscapes, harbors and beaches, historical subjects and architecture. In addition to the paintings, he also executed etchings from his subjects, including a group of four landscapes consisting of two winter scenes with skaters, one with a mail buggy stopped in front of an inn, and a marina. The village houses, with their thatched roofs and rustic facades, frame a scene teeming with life. In the center of this scene, stands a tall cuccagna tree, a symbol of joy and celebration. Small figures, painted with quick, light brushstrokes, move vividly: some dance to the sound of invisible music, others chat animatedly, and still others observe the scene with an amused air. The sunlight, filtering through the clouds, illuminates the scene with diffuse softness, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The figures are rendered with singular precision, and the details of the landscape, while essential, contribute to an atmosphere of realism. The subject depicted is the ancient folk tradition game of the Cuccagna Tree known in many European countries, in which participants must climb to the top of a tree covered with grease or other slippery substances to collect prizes. The origin of this of game probably derives from the May Albert that was raised in villages on the occasion of Calendimaggio (around the first days of May) to celebrate the arrival of spring. In some cases the tree was carried in a house-to-house procession as a wish for good luck. Anthropologist James Frazer places its origin in tree cults widespread throughout Europe, due to the beneficial power contained in the tree spirit, which was thought to magically bestow gifts and good fortune. In particular, the cuccagna tree would derive, according to Frazer, from a particular form of the May trees, when it was pruned, leaving only the uncovered top to which various foodstuffs were attached, which people struggled to grab.

By Angelo Monticelli, Dancing Putti
Located in Milan, IT
Angelo Monticelli (Milan, 1778-1837), attr. Dancing putti Oil on canvas, 122.5 x 131 cm The canvas presented here, referable to the 19th century, constituted an exquisite example of a painting made to decorate a boiserie, as evidenced by the particularity of the format and the ornamental subject matter. The theme of dancing putti takes up a widely used and experimented model around the 1620s, on which the greatest artists tried their hand: pordenone, author of the Dance of Putti now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, for example, was able to make use of multiple visual models to fine-tune this complex and original composition, such as having known Marcantonio Raimondi's famous engraving with a gyre of cupids, derived from an invention of Raphael himself and dated between 1517 and 1520. Over the following centuries, the fame of this prissy subject was never diminished. In fact, the work under consideration can be attributed to the hand of 18th-century artist Angelo Monticelli, who specialized in tempera drawing and was a pupil of painter Andrea Appiani (1754-1817), active mainly in Lombardy, where, for the Teatro alla Scala he designed the figures of the box parapets (1807) and the curtain (1821). In 1826, during the repainting of Ferrara's Municipal Theater, Monticelli decorated the plafond with an Apotheosis of Lodovico Ariosto. The curtain of the Rossini Theater in Pesaro is also by his hand. For the Duke of Lodi Francesco Melzi...
