About the Item

Workshop of Polidoro de Renzi known as Polidoro da Lanciano (Lanciano, c. 1515 - Venice, 1565) Holy Family with San Giovannino Oil on canvas, 90 x 88 cm Polidoro de' Renzi was born c. 1515 in the Abruzzi town from which he takes the name by which he is known, Polidoro da Lanciano. There is not much definite information about Polidore's early life. We know that his father was a ceramist and that he moved to Venice, a city that became the focus of his artistic activity. In Venice, Polidoro came into contact with the great masters of the Venetian Renaissance, such as Titian and Tintoretto. Although there is no documentary evidence of his direct training in their workshops, his work clearly reveals the influence of these giants of art. Polidoro's style is characterized by a remarkable eclecticism. Echoes of classicism, Mannerist culture and the formal innovations of his contemporaries can be discerned in his works. Polidoro da Lanciano's work is characterized by a wide variety of subjects, ranging from sacred to mythological painting. Among his most famous works are: The Banquet of the Gods:, now housed in the Capodimonte Museum in Naples; Christ and the Adulteress, n biblical subject popular in Renaissance art, of which Polidoro produced several versions; and the Descent of the Holy Spirit; an altarpiece that clearly shows the influence of Bonifacio Veronese, preserved in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. The canvas under consideration, depicting the Holy Family with St. John the Baptist, fits perfectly into the context of Polidoro da Lanciano's pictorial production. The composition, characterized by the typical curtain that opens onto a landscape and the diagonal that guides the eye to the Virgin, is a recurring element in his production. The gestures of the characters, so natural and spontaneous, and the color palette, rich in delicate hues, give the work a grace and delicacy typical of the artist. Take, for example, the famous Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine from Ca Rezzonico or the Madonna and Child and St. Louis of Toulouse from the Budapest Szépművészeti Múzeum and the Madonna and Child, St. John and Saint from St. Peter's Basilica, Perugia. The kneeler is carved and sculpted dark walnut. It has a mask-like decoration in the center, while it is ornamented along the corners by caryatid pilasters in high relief and masks with different expressions. Features an undercounter drawer with frame. Separated from the drawer by a projecting frame is a door opening, surrounded by an elegantly carved frame. It is equipped with a tilting platform. The overhang of the top is emphasized by a notched band, while the convex base has a pod decoration.
