About the Item

Prakash Karmakar - Untitled - 29 x 20 inches ( unframed size ) Dry Pastel on Paper , 1999 Prakash Karmakar was the most senior artist of Bengal . He was instrumental in the Bengal Movement of Art along with Bijon Choudhury his friend and fellow artist . Both lived next to each other's house in Bengal and were instrumental Pillars of the Bengal Art Movement along with contemporaries Jogen Choudhury and Rabin Mondal . Pastel on Paper This Painting of a Blatantly Nude and Somewhat Sensous Woman wrapped in an Indian Green Colour Saree with her Mass of Long Hair Flowing Down her Back is a typical of the Indian Bengal Master artist Prakash Karmakar. Prakash Karmakar came from a prominent family and his Father Prahalad Karmakar was a very big artist. However all his works were burnt in the fire. Style : Legendary master artist Lt. Prokash Karmakar from Bengal was solely responsible for the Bengal Movement of Art. His father Lt. Prahalad Karmakar was a very famous legendary artist ; but unfortunately all his paintings got burned in the riot. Prokash Karmakar led a very tough life , often sleeping on the platforms of the railway stations of Bengal. Later he worked in the textile line and simultaneously painted and exhibited his works on his own strength , until he got huge acclaim and success . Prakash Karmakar is considered a revolutionary in the sense that he doesn’t exhibit in art galleries. All through his artistic career he has always exhibited on street corners because he did not want his paintings to be imprisoned within four walls. Most of his earlier artworks capture remembrances from the past – some of them are very personal, and some are from the darkest moments of human history. More recently he has painted landscapes, depicting lush tropical vegetation, hills and valleys, seascapes and mangroves in their wild diversity which have made him even more popular with art galleries. Large fish-shaped eyes are assets of Prakash Karmakar females by which he is often recalled. More so because his female are rendered askew with voluptuous curves, drunken stare and sometimes wantonly explicit erotic gestures. At one time, quite early in his life his demonic damsels, femmes’ fatales, or nudes with fleshy shapes of sensual bulge or dismembered limbs or focused genitalia became his signature images. His landscapes too with their piquant painterly refashioning of natural forms and by sheer force of their varied recurrence are currently a fresh subject-index of his style. About the Artist and his work : Born : Prakash Karmakar was born (1933-2014) in Calcutta. Education : Govt. college of Art & craft, Kolkata Prokash Karmakar came from an artistic family; his father was a renowned artist of his time. Unfortunately, all of his father's paintings were destroyed in the Hindu Muslim riots in the 1940s, which also ruined his family. By 1949, both his parents had passed away, forcing him to abandon his studies at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata. He joined the army for two years and then quit to work as a graphic design manager for a medical firm in Kolkata. Virtually penniless and desperate for a break, in 1956, he held a street exhibition, the first in the city, hanging his works along a corner. Nude Woman, Conte & Dry Pastel on Paper by Contemporary Artist "In Stock"
By Sanatan Dinda
Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
Sanatan Dinda - Untitled - 28 x 20 inches (unframed size) Conte & Dry Pastel on Paper, 2016 shipment without frame Style : Sanatan Dinda discovers the beautiful amidst the ruins of a dilapidated city; his work becomes lyrical while he puts his signature on the curves and cleavages of sculpted human bodies. Born in the intestines of North Kolkata, the lanes and by lanes of Kumartuli, the squalor and the dirt, the refinement and nuances of a traditional craft of idol-making, the ancient river, the lonely bathing places taught him everything. Poverty all around, Sanatan had enough courage, even in his formative years, to convince himself that eternity could be invented, here and now, in a day. His art, both sculpture and painting, engages in a dialogue between tradition and modernity. Today, his work can be considered to be a prime example of contemporary Bengali visual culture. For last few years, Sanatan has been trying to stress upon traditional clay-sculpting – primarily the local popular sculpture...

Lakshmi – 16-02-21, Drawing, Pastels on Paper
By Corne Akkers
Located in Yardley, PA
Lakshmi – 16-02-21 Indian Goddess At last: I discovered my regular model is Lakshmi, goddess of wealth, fortune, love, beauty, joy and prosperity. In Indian art she is often depicted as a golden-coloured woman; elegantly dressed and prosperity-showering. She also is associated with lotus flowers, so I made an arcade of styled lotus petals. I turned them into representational abstractions like the ones I saw in indian drawings and paintings. Colors are strong on purpose such as in indian art. I harmonized colors a bit more though in style with western tradition. Klimt as Inspirational Source Some time ago with my model I discussed some new ways I wanted to explore. For no particular reason we both thought of Klimt and especially his oil of Judith and the head of Holofernes...
