Raphaël Arnal
Mid Century French Expressionist Landscape Portrait, La Fermière Normande.

1949

About the Item

A mid-century French Expressionist oil on paper, laid on board, painting titled 'La Fermière Normande' (The Normandy Farmer) by Raphael Arnal. The painting is signed bottom right and dated Marseille 1949 and titled to the back board. Presented in a modern frame. Provenance: Direct from the artist's atelier, south of France. This expressive artwork features a contemplative figure seated in a rural setting, captured in vibrant strokes of colour. A farmer resting after a hard days work. The use of bold, impressionistic brushwork defines the woman's form, with contrasting hues of blue, orange, and green creating depth and texture. Her relaxed pose exudes a sense of introspection, enhanced by the surrounding landscape. The composition is balanced by a bright moon illuminating the sky, casting a serene glow on the quaint houses that recede into the background. The artist skillfully contrasts the cool tones of the night with the warm, earthy colours of the figure's attire, producing a harmonious yet dynamic visual tension. The piece draws viewers into its tranquil yet emotionally resonant atmosphere, beautifully capturing the essence of solitude and the peaceful embrace of nature. This work is a compelling example of blending human emotion with the natural world in a captivating narrative. The painter Raphael Arnal (1906-1963) was a Provençal expressionist artist, he attended the Montpellier School of Fine Arts and exhibited in Montpellier, Avignon, Salon de Provence, Paris and Marseille among others. He settled in Marseille for a long time in the Pintade district, often represented in his work and then finally in Vence towards the end of his life. He was a great friend of Max Jacob (the poet and artist who taught Picasso to speak French) with whom he often corresponded and this correspondence was subsequently published by the magazine 'Massilia'. A complex personality of modern art, his painting is marked by a strong expression and intense colours, His work is still highly appreciated in the arts community of Marseille.

French oil on board painting of a bucolic picnic in the countryside. Presented in period chip carved wood frame. The artist has been inspired by the painting Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe by Édouard Manet. They have created an intimate scene of four friends sharing a picnic in the countryside. The central character is naked whereas the others are in various stages of undress. The picnic is spread out on a fine white cloth, the wicker picnic basket to one side. A dog looks on from the side-lines hoping for something from the picnic. A very charming and intimate scene colourfully rendered. Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Luncheon...
