A mid-century French Expressionist oil on paper, laid on board, painting of a lady sewing by Raphael Arnal. The painting is signed bottom left and dated, located and attributed to the back board. Presented in a gilt wood frame.
Provenance: Direct from the artist's atelier, south of France.
This vibrant artwork is a striking example of abstract expressionism, skillfully blending bold colours and dynamic forms. Dominated by rich blues, fiery reds, and warm yellows, the painting captures the essence of emotional intensity. Arnal has used a fond/paper that has previously been printed and the characters are still visible in places giving an extra dynamic to the work. The central figure, depicted with broad, sweeping strokes, sits aside a table carrying out their sewing. The background is a tumultuous swirl of textured layers, creating a sense of depth and chaos. This interplay of colour and form draws the viewer into a contemplative space, evoking both personal introspection and universal themes of beauty and complexity. The painter Raphael Arnal (1906-1963) was a Provençal expressionist artist, he attended the Montpellier School of Fine Arts and exhibited in Montpellier, Avignon, Salon de Provence, Paris and Marseille among others. He settled in Marseille for a long time in the Pintade district, often represented in his work and then finally in Vence towards the end of his life. He was a great friend of Max Jacob (the poet and artist who taught Picasso to speak French) with whom he often corresponded and this correspondence was subsequently published by the magazine 'Massilia'. A complex personality of modern art, his painting is marked by a strong expression and intense colours,
His work is still highly appreciated in the arts community of Marseille.

"My birth place is Yakhroma town, in the vicinity of Moscow. It is situated on high hills, from where broad Bruegelian vistas are open. The uneven terrain with significant differences of high and low; a canal between the Moskva river and the Volga; small rivers, woods and villages; a nearby ancient town of Dmitrov, which is equal to Moscow in age; ships cruising the canal and trains outdistancing them – all this I saw from my window since my early years. It was a view that embraced all the diversity of the world. This is why I can say that the impressions of my childhood and youth – beautiful nature and remarkable people – are the most important ones.
In the museum of Moscow's St. Andronic Monastery I copied the best examples of the old Russian painting of the 15th-17th centuries.
My own style evolved from the ancient icon...
