About the Item

'Balinese Pottery Market', oil on canvas, by Régine van den Broek d'Obrenan (1931). The artist visited Bali in 1931 (among other islands) with her new husband, Charles. The naive painting depicts women tending to their wares in a pottery market or bartering with others; a traditional Balinese compound occupies the background. While it is indeed a naive artist's depiction, it is at the same time of significance historically owing to the fact that it documents life there during this period. The painting is in good overall condition having recently been reconditioned by an art restoration professional. It is newly framed with a French-style linen slip. The artist's initials, "R.B.O." appear in the lower right hand. Please enjoy the many photos with the listing. Upon request a video will be provided. About the Artist: Régine van den Broek d'Obrenan (née Régine de Ganay) was born in 1909 in Paris, into a well-to-do family descended by her father from a family of French nobility and by her mother from a large family of industrialists. She married Charles van den Broek d'Obrenan in 1931 (Hence her initials: R.B.O.) and their travels took them to Bali where this painting was created. She was then part of a group of five young people who embarked in Marseilles on the yacht La Korrigane for an adventure to visit the main archipelagos of the Pacific. Régine was the artist of the group and drew and painted her visual discoveries. She was also known to the French as an explorer and writer - she died at the age of 106 and is buried in Paris' Père-Lachaise cemetery.
