Rene Jerome Legrand
Three children playing sandcastles on beach, medium impressionist oil painting

About the Item

"Day at the Beach" Oil on Canvas, laid on board, Signed and Framed by Rene Jerome Legrand (Born 1953) This is a super oil painting by Legrand which has employed his more muted colour palette. Three young girls are playing with fishing nets and sandcastles and are absorbed in their play. It is a beautiful sunny day at the seaside and has hints of nostalgia and of innocent days gone by. Legrand is well known for his skilful beach scenes and not only are they are highly prized, they are in collections in the UK, the USA and the world over. His work has been sold in many of the top class art galleries in London and were showcased in Harrods. His paintings are instantly recognisable as they are very textured and have lots of impasto.

JOHN ROBERTSON REID RBA, ROI, RI British 1851 – 1926 “Harvest of the Sea” Oil on canvas, Signed and Framed. John Robertson Reid was born in Edinburgh and studied at the Royal Scottish Academy schools before moving to Cornwall and later London. He became interested in the social-realist movement; probably influenced by Bastien-Lepage and in 1879 his “Toil and Pleasure” was hung in the Royal Academy and bought by the Chantrey Bequest. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy and at the Royal Society of British Artists and also the Royal Institute, he was a member of all three Institutes. Reid’s subjects – field workers, humble people – were similar to those of Bastien-Lepage, but his handling of the paint was more dynamic and reflected his training at the Scottish Academy under Chalmers and McTaggart. He was also a good colourist, and some of his coastal scenes with fishermen and women in the foreground, have rich blues and greens, of which ours is a typical example. Reid was also a fine watercolourist in a breezy style similar to that of David Cox. Not all his work was about hard work he also painted rural people at rest or playing cricket and was always capable of brilliant work; his Venetian...

Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. (In the 19th century many artists made educational trips to Italy). It was a long visit: the child was two years old by the time the family returned to Ghent.[1] After a short period of practice with his father, van Biesbroeck was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His first painting, "The Shepherd" (French: Le pâtre), was sold at the Triennale in Ghent. In 1888, when he was only 15 years old, he made his debut at the "Salon des Champs-Elysées" in Paris with his monumental work "The Launch of the Argo" (French: Le lancement...

  • Printemps
    By Charles Levier
    Located in Costa Mesa, CA
A beautiful woman sits at an open window, gazing down at a small bird who has landed nearby in this serene portrait by Charles Levier. Warm orange tones are played off their complements in shades of blue, the artist utilizing several different layers of oils to create a subtle and relaxed view of a spring day near the sea. Beyond the window a small chapel sits on a peninsula, surrounded tranquil blue waters. This work, like many of Levier's, belongs to the French figurative movement of the Glorious Thirty (Les Trente Glorieuses) - the golden period of thirty years after WWII which were a time of great hope and prosperity in France. Inspired by Hollywood cinema, Charles Levier sought harmony in composition and purity of color and form. His said that his creations represented "a light and delicate world, of dark and subtle shades and colors." Levier worked in a somewhat abstracted, cubist style. Additionally he often employed the French technique of "cloisonnism" (after the French for "partition"), a style of post-Impressionist painting with bold and flat forms separated by dark contours, also seen in this work. The term was coined by critic Edouard Dujardin on the occasion of the Salon des Indépendants, in March 1888 and was commonly used by artists like Émile Bernard, Louis Anquetin, Paul...
