About the Item
Artists tend to peak quite young, and I often love their early work. It tends to have an infectious enthusiasm, great vigour, originality, imagination and a sense of fun. René Marie Castaing (1896-1943) was particularly precocious: having started to seriously paint at 14 years old, he began exhibiting in salons at the age of 16, meeting with great success. A student of his father, the painter Henri Joseph Castaing in the South of France, and later of Paul Albert Laurens in Paris , he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1913 and received a silver medal there in 1925.
He was the first artist from his native Béarn region to win the Premier Grand Prix de Rome in 1924 and subsequently became a member of the Society of French Artists.
The work presented here, painted when Castaing was only just 23 or 24 years old, is a modern take on medieval life, rendered with almost fluorescent colours and a style that would not be out of place in a contemporary graphic novel.
Depicted is a Troubadour, seated next to his faithful hound in the shadow of a castle, under a red leaved tree.
A pendant work is available is a separate listing. The oil on canvas is presented in a very slim artists' strip frame which underlines the modernity of the work. The painting is signed and dated (19)20 at the lower left.
Works by Réné Castaing feature in numerous churches, in collections of the Museums of Fine Arts in Orléans and Pau, as well as in the Academy of Fine Arts.
