Magnificent painting done of the Times Square Multiplex Cinema, not far from the studio of the legendary artist Richard Haas, the world's top architectural muralist and trompe l'oeil artist. The words MAD refers to Madame Tussauds. In 2021 this work was featured in the exhibition "New York and No Place Else: Art that Celebrates New York", sponsored by the Chashama Foundation at 320 West 23rd Street in New York City. Measurements: 57 inches vertical x 33.25 inches horizontal Artwork alone: 52.25 inches (vertical) x 28.25 inches (horizontal) Richard Haas biography: Richard Haas (b. 1936) is an iconic American painter and printmaker known for his trompe l’oeil style architectural murals. He grew up in Spring Green, Wisconsin, not far from Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright’s estate. Haas’s early exposure to Wright’s masterful architecture proved to be an enormous influence on his artistic interests. Richard Haas received a BS degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a MFA from the University of Minnesota before moving to New York City. He taught printmaking courses at Bennington College in Vermont for ten years before he decided to pursue a full-time career painting murals. Since 1979, he has painted over 120 murals, many of which were commissioned, at a variety of locations including the former Board of Education building in Brooklyn, the Boston Architectural Center, Chase Field, Edison Brothers Store Inc. in St. Louis, the Federal Building and Courthouse in Kansas City, and the main branch of the New York Public Library. Throughout his career, Richard Haas has also been elected a National Academician by the National Academy of Design, a Guggenheim Fellow, and a McDowell Fellow. He has received the American Institute of Architects Medal of Honor, the New York City Municipal Art Society Award, the Doris C. This 2002 work was done by the artist to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 terrorist attacks, as the artist's studio was in lower Manhattan at the time. A similar work done by Appel from this era was acquired by the Police Museum in lower Manhattan, near Ground Zero. This work is elegantly framed in a handmade brushed aluminum museum frame and is ready to hang. Signed, titled and dated verso. Ms. Appel has been the subject of a 50 year career survey at the Brattleboro Museum in Vermont. Measurements: Frame: 18.78 x 24.3 x 4 inches Artwork: 18 x 24 inches This work will be accompanied by a limited edition catalogue of the artist's museum retrospective, along with the original invitation and separate promotional materials. Thelma Appel biography A co-founder of the Bennington College Summer Painting Workshop, Thelma Appel is a representational and abstract painter who has been working and teaching for more than six decades. Most recently, she was subject of a 50-year career survey (October, 2019 -February 2020) at the Brattleboro Museum in Vermont, entitled Thelma Appel: Abstract/Observed curated by Mara Williams, and she exhibited at the Mattatuck Museum in Connecticut which acquired one of her fabric collages for their permanent collection. Thelma Appel was raised in Darjeeling, India and educated in London, England, at St. Martin's School of Art (now Central St. Martins) and Hornsey College of Art before emigrating to the United States in the 1960s. Her work has been exhibited in numerous venues, including the Bennington Museum, the Berkshire Museum in North Adams, Mass., the Children's Museum of the Arts in New York City, the Mattatuck Museum, the Brattleboro Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Robert Hull Fleming Museum at the University of Vermont and the University of Pennsylvania Fine Arts Gallery. In 1974 she was awarded a YADDO Fellowship, and in 1975, Thelma Appel, along with the painter Carol Haerer, co-founded the Bennington College Summer Painting Workshop, where many distinguished painters of the day, both abstract and representational, conducted master classes. Among them were Neil Welliver, John Button, Alice Neel, Larry Poons, Friedel Dzubas, Stanley Boxer, Elizabeth Murray and Doug Ohlson – a program that continued until 1980. She has also taught drawing at Parsons School of Design, painting at Southern Vermont College and at the University of Connecticut.
