About the artwork: This Impressionist painting, Femme avec une Poupée, depicts a young woman seated at an occasional table in front of a garden window. The young woman, wearing a flowing burgundy dress, is playing with an exotic princess doll whose robes reflect the springtime colors outside.
While this artwork is unsigned, it came from the fonds d’atelier of Richard Emile Miller (1875-1943), an American Impressionist painter and member of the Giverny Colony of American Impressionists. Miller was primarily a figurative painter, known for his paintings of women posing languidly in interiors or outdoor settings. He often went to Giverny, France where he leased a house adjacent to Monet’s property.
In 1906, Miller was giving summer art instruction at his studio in Giverny to the female students of an American painter, Mary Colman Wheeler, who was the founder and first head of the Wheeler School in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1887, she started a practice of taking groups of students to France during the summer to learn the French language and study painting and art history, and she also rented a house close to Monet’s residence. In the mornings Miller and his students worked in his studio with a model, such as the one featured in this painting, and in the afternoon they sketched outdoors.
The back of the board on which this artwork is painted is stamped Paul Foinet, an artist supplies shop that was used extensively by American artists, many of whom trained in Paris and painted in Giverny, including Richard Miller, Theodore Earl Butler, Elizabeth Nourse, Theodore Robinson and several others. This artwork is set into a lightly gilded pale brown channeled wood frame ready to hang. Painting dimensions without frame = 31 x 25 inches.
