About
Colorful and vibrant folk art painting on found wood.
Artist Statement
“I love to paint. It’s very natural for me. It’s a daydream with paint or an expression of feeling or an experiment or just fun and soul exploration or prayer or therapy or all these. Of course these are all just words—painting is often a new mystery each time. I’m happy to show in Nashville at the Red Arrow gallery. I don’t know much about Nashville; just that so many great musicians are there. I’m impressed with the way the Red Arrow gallery has endured and seems to have a good energy. Some may call my art folk art or many other labels. I don’t like feeling boxed in by a label and since I still do it like I did as a child, I sometimes describe it as advanced children’s art. It’s a gift to me and in that light I don’t take much credit for it. I’m thankful and painting is so enjoyable that if they disappeared after I did them I’d probably still do them; just as I play guitar and the music is gone. Well, that’s my statement and I hope you enjoy the show.” Rick
Bio
Born in 1958, Columbus, Ohio. I have felt the gift of being an artist from the beginning. I did it for fun and expression and grownups and children liked it. I played sports-I was the self-acclaimed tetherball champ in grade school and in my teens I became a good golfer. High School art classes turned me off so I did less for a while, but felt I was still improving in my mind. I went to Ohio State to play golf on the team. We were the best team in the North and in 1979 we won the N.C.A.A. I picked art as a major and fell back in love with it. I played on the P.G.A. tour in 81-81 but was one of the worst of the best and ended up going to grad school for a place to paint. I didn’t care about the degree, just a place to paint. I tried living off my art sales on and off for years but the pressure of being poor seemed unfair to my art. Luckily, I ended up slowing becoming a “fix up” man to help pay for life. I’ve been showing since 1979 and selling since 1983. I don’t keep count, but I would guess there are well over 1000 pieces of mine all over the world.
