About the Item

Roland Fisher “Fishermen in Mevagissey Harbour”, circa 1930 Oil on canvas Signed lower right This compelling maritime scene by Roland Fisher captures a moment of industrious calm along the quayside at Mevagissey, one of Cornwall’s oldest and most storied fishing villages. Painted circa 1930, the composition offers a documentary-like richness, portraying a group of fishermen at work—sorting and preparing the day’s catch beside large tubs and coils of rope, with the familiar green hulls of Cornish luggers moored behind them. Fisher’s style is anchored in the traditions of English social realism, and here he delivers a remarkably well-observed slice of coastal life. The textures of wet stone, sun-bleached boats, and weathered garments are rendered with earthy accuracy, while the interplay of light and shadow lends the composition a quiet, narrative depth. The artist’s framing—placing the viewer almost at the fishermen’s elbow—suggests both immediacy and empathy, drawing us into the labour and rhythm of the working harbour. During the interwar period, scenes such as this held growing resonance, as artists turned increasingly to local industry and traditional trades in response to rapid social change. Mevagissey, with its narrow lanes, granite buildings, and deep fishing heritage, offered a wealth of inspiration for painters seeking authenticity and national character in their subjects. Roland Fisher was among those who brought such settings vividly to canvas, preserving them in all their working vitality. This is a painting of both historical and artistic significance—a visual record of a way of life once central to the British coastal economy, rendered with quiet dignity and skill. A fine addition to collections of British maritime art or 20th-century social painting. This piece is a very fine example of the artists work and far better in quality and composition than other paintings by the artist. Framed in a Vintage English frame

English 19thC Victorian Shipping scene with fishing boats in the English Channel
By William Anslow Thornley
Located in Woodbury, CT
William Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes whose work is very similar to Hubert and Charles Thornley, who may have been members of the same family. He painted scenes of genre, architecture and landscapes as well. A number of the landscapes were of Belgium, Holland, Italy and Norway. However, it is for his seascapes that he is best remembered. Thornley’s works are beautifully detailed and show a masterful understanding of the moods of both weather and sea. They are often small in size and put together with fine detail and great artistic merit. Thornley’s fishing scenes are spirited and similar in style to those of “Jock” Wilson, and are often painted in pairs. Thornley’s works have always been popular when they appear on the art market. He was believed to have first exhibited marines at the Royal Academy in 1859 from an address in Paddington, London and also at the British Institution from 1861 until it closed in 1867. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1898. Thornley also exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honourable mention in 1881 and a third place medal in 1888. William Thornley also went by the names Georges William and William...
