A beautiful painting by Roland Wheelwright in keeping with his traditional subject matter. This piece is a large and important example of his work and is not often seen.
It has a label on the reverse with his handwriting on it which could be an old exhibition label.

Rowland Wheelwright was a painter of naturalistic genre scenes and showed a particular delight in painting the young girls of the 1920s and 30s, often bathing or enjoying the delights of the countryside; he also painted rural scenes with horses, as well as historical and classical subjects.
The artist was born in Ipswich in Australia in 1870, the grandson of John Hawden Wheelwright, a court painter in Brussels. His parents were sheep farmers, who returned to England following the drought in Australia in the 1880s.
On his return to England, he studied art at St. John’s Wood Art School and then the Herkomer School of Art at Bushey, alongside Lucy Kemp Welch. Rowland completed his studies at the Royal Academy Schools in London.
He was a prolific artist and exhibited many of the principal London venues, including the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of British Artists.
Roland Wheelwright was also an accomplished illustrator and he provided the illustrations for Longman’s Swan edition of Shakespeare’s King Henry V and Harrap’s editions of Ivanhoe, The Talisman. Lorna Doone and The Three Musketeers. Rowland Wheelwright died in Bushey, Herefordshire in 1955.
