About the Item

GASPAR MIRÓ I LLEÓ Spanish, 1849 - 1914 JARDIN DES TUILERIES signed "gmiró" (lower right) oil on canvas 23 x 45-1/2 inches (58.5 x 115.6 cm.) framed: 26 x 49 inches (66 x 124 cm.) PROVENANCE Sotheby´s Arcade New York, Sale June 21 & 22, 2005, lot 112 Spanish Collection, Madrid Gaspar Miró i Lleó was born in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona, in a wealthy family. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, together with professors Ramón Martín Alsina and Antonio Caba. After finishing his studies, he moved to Paris in 1886, where he remained for two years. There he had the opportunity to admire the works of the Barbizon masters, whose influence was decisive throughout his production. Impressionism was at its peak. And the city was in all its splendor. All these discoveries were decisive for the artist, who settled in 1901 definitely in the city of the Seine. His paintings focused his interest in capturing the light, the sensations and the transience of the moment, as reflected in this beautiful Avenue des Champs-Élysées, with a beautiful evening light. His characters come and go in the hustle and bustle of life. The perspective of Avenue des Champs-Élysées plastically emphasizes the transformations of the tree line, the architectural monuments and the figures at the mercy of the evolution of the lights and the colors of the instant, giving clear prominence to the movement. The color is stain and shape, explosion of light and mirror of modernity. A new painting for a city that stands as an emblem of the modern.
