Rosalie Hamblin Mills
Rare Baltimore Harbor Oil Painting, Pratt Street Dock, ca 1950 - Rosalie Hamblin

1950

About the Item

This lively oil painting depicts Baltimore’s busy waterfront, specifically the former piers that lined Pratt Street in the Inner Harbor. Painted by local artist Rosalie Mills ( née Hamblin), the scene depicts the watermelon boats that berthed near Pier 5. The painting dates to the 1950’s. The historic buildings that once lined Pratt Street, before urban renewal clearance of the 1960’s, provide the background for the scene. Hamblin’s attention to detail is quite good and calls to mind other Baltimore painters of the time such as Jacob Glushakow and Melvin Miller. It could be considered very late Ashcan style in that it depicts the somewhat gritty side of American cities. The details show a dockworker, the owner or operator of the boat and better dressed customers that have come to pick out a good watermelon or two. Hamblin’s composition, color choice and rendering techniques are spot on in this work and depict a time in Baltimore that is long gone. Rosalie Hamblin was born in the area and at the time of the painting lived in Glen Burnie, per the original label on the back of the board. She died in 2005 after being married twice, so as this is signed with her maiden name (Hamblin) it very likely dates to the 1950’s, or even earlier. The age of the board also points to that time period. The painting measures 18” x 24” and is in very good condition. It is signed lower right and has been recently cleaned. The frame is of the period and enhances the work. Overall framed dimensions are 23 1/2” x 29 1/2”. This vintage Baltimore Harbor painting by local artist Rosalie Hamblin is ready to hang on the wall of your choice.
