About the Item

"Women Labour" is an original acrylic painting on paper by Samuel B. Kpetenkple. It depicts two women in colorful dresses carrying children in sashes and baskets on their head. The artist signed the piece on the bottom of the painting. 16" x 8 1/8" art 23" x 15 1/4" frame Artist Statement: "As often said there are some few "indigenous and naturals" who seem to have been born with brushes and pallet knifes in their hands. Nii Kpetenkple Samuel is one of such gifted and talented Artist; Painting to me, is one of the eloquent media for expressing myself about all the corners of the world and all that it holds; Of course it is not by accident, that i went into Painting. Nii Kpetenkple was born and bred in a coastal town, a suburb of Accra called NUNGUA, it's only 10 miles away from Accra. I am now in my late twenties. Nii Kpetenkple, had his training as an Artist at one of the secondary schools in Accra - Ghana. Later I had my tertiary training at Ultimate school of Art, (u.s.a) Ghana. I enjoy sketching, swimming, reading and music that keeps me working always. My childhood experiences with fishermen in their fishing expedition, fish mongers, market women, local houses or structures and meaningful Ghanaian symbols with abstract figures made me one of the expert in that area. As an Artist, art enables me to see nature as eternal, grasp a fragment of the Almighty's plan, even a bit of land scape, few pieces of fruits or a human form. Throughout my period of contemplation and years of uninterrupted close contact with nature, vast truths flashed upon my mental horizon, to which i gave expression in my paintings. I had no doubt that, i had discovored a new realm in the world of painting and would carry on to a fuller completion with what many gurus of the Art industry like Picasso, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Cezanne, Van gogh, Gauguin, Ablade Grover, Amon Kotei and I myself have started. My name seems to have gone into the calendar ( archives ) of every Art lover or patron, home and abroad. Acrylics, Oils, Gouache, Pastel and many more are my main medium of expression. I FELT THAT SOME DAY, MY ART WOULD BE SEEN OR RECOGNISED AS SUPREMELY GREAT. I hold a philosophy that every struggle for survival is a point in a positive direction. Therefore, MANKIND IS NOT A LAZY ENTITY."

Her unique art pieces are inspired by ancient and contemporary African designs. They depict typical village scenes of life around Lake Victoria. 'Painting is the only way I can get back to my roots by using our cultural materials such as bark cloth that was used by our ancestors and helps me preserve my culture through some of the motifs I use that were used long ago as signs of belief and worship in the African culture.' Her distinctive artwork is well known in Uganda and throughout East Africa. Her bold, fluid lines explore complex subjects such as women empowerment and national development with economy and grace. Her central artistic preoccupation is the continuation of distinctively African culture. In 2007, she started her own label, Atal Stella. There she focuses on using what is locally available, including eco-friendly, natural and re-cycled material. Her designs have showcased at the Africa Fashion Week New York, in 2010 and at the Green Fashion...
