About the Item

“My father is the subject in Thou Art Loved….Thou Art Loved.” If you were to speak to my father at this point, you may not recognize the repeating patterns of conversation, or the slight blank stares that seem to sweep over him at times. He may seem just as lucid as the world around him. But over time, some of these impairments find their way into the conversation. I have isolated my father on an island void of life and vegetation. This void represents his mind at a certain point of the day. The foundation is there, but much of it has been wiped clean. Most would call it desolate. But, if you look closer, you see it has everything necessary for life. He just needs to plant the seed. My father is a strong-willed Marine, based in order. This is symbolized by the Adinkra symbol at his knee, a symbol of strength and humility. Even the strong must humble themselves. The double portrait symbolizes the dementia he suffers through with absolute dignity. The colorful cloud behind him symbolizes the memories he holds within, and the white cloud is the cycle that he goes through each day he wakes and attempts to figure out his place in the world. He has everything he needs to build his day even though at day's end, or a minute later, it will again be wiped bare and ready to be cultivated with new memories that won’t last. The title refers to the one manifesto my father never forgets, to be thankful for the life he has been granted, and to tell his family that they are loved…forget…then tell them again."
