This superb set of four hunting scenes by Samuel Henry Alken, one of the most celebrated sporting artists of 19th century England, vividly captures the drama and spectacle of the fox hunt. Each canvas presents a different stage of the chase: the gathering of hounds, the vigorous ride across open countryside, dramatic leaps over obstacles, and the conclusion of the hunt.
Alken, the son of renowned sporting painter Samuel Alken Jr., was admired for his ability to combine accuracy of equine anatomy with a lively sense of movement and atmosphere. His works were widely published by leading London printmakers, including Ackermann and Johnson, who helped to establish the enduring popularity of English hunting imagery at home and abroad.
