Atlas Served, Original Contemporary Playful Surrealist Narrative Painting

A humorous work by artist Sarah Jacobs, this vertical format painting features a dynamic composition placing a male figure, the Greek Titan Atlas, in outer space against a complex galaxy of stars. Rather than holding up the weight of the world, as is the traditional narrative of the myth, this painting brings a far more jovial tone as he gazes up towards the Earth which has been depicted as an inflatable beach ball. His arm reaches up, as if he has just bounced the Earth into the cosmic air, and he wears a grin on his face showcasing his delight.
Artist Commentary:
Even Atlas needs to take a day off! This painting plays with scale. The pattern on Atlas's toga resembles the patterns inside a virus, so they represent the very small, where as Atlas is as large as the solar system, yet Earth is rendered small, as a print on a beach ball. This is a fun and whimsical piece.
About the Artist:
Sarah Jacobs is a contemporary artist. Her work has been exhibited in the US and in Europe and she has taken part in artist residencies in Grimma, Germany, Cali, Colombia, and Taos, New Mexico. She has won multiple grants, including the Arts Council England Grant, and her work can be found in public and private collections in the US, UK, and Hong Kong. She has had solo and two person exhibitions in New York City, London, Wrocław, Poland and Bristol, England, among other cities. Born in 1984, Jacobs was raised in Littlestown, Pennsylvania. She was educated in Art History at Gettysburg College and received her MFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore in 2010. There she studied under Joyce Kozloff and Timothy App. Jacobs moved back to the USA in 2014 after 3 years living in London and Bristol, UK where she became a naturalized British citizen.
