Bask, Original Contemporary Surrealist Figurative Mixed Media Portrait Painting
42" x 33" x 1.5" (HxWxD) Oil and Print on Canvas
This mixed media portrait by artist Sarah Jacobs features a lively and dynamic composition filled with a variety of patterns and natural subject matter that surround a smiling woman who reclines with her head resting back on her hands. Directly in front of her are two large tiger lilies that leap off of the canvas. The rest of the composition almost looks as though a wall has been layered with wallpaper and each one has been peeled back to expose another. Red and orange fall leaves stand contrast to a darker floral motif of purple flowers against a black background. Two additional patterns bring in a more man-made and art deco feel with the inclusion of ornate gold decoration. This style is very reminiscent of the works by contemporary portrait painter Kehinde Wiley.
Artist Commentary:
This is a portrait of my friend, Linda, who is also an artist. In some of her prints she takes elements of photos of her previous paintings and combines them digitally to create new imagery, so as an homage to her I used images of my previous paintings plus the new fall leaves pattern that I designed to create all of the imagery besides Linda, and parts of the lilies. She and they are painted. The rest is a printed collage of older paintings of mine.
About the Artist:
Sarah Jacobs is a contemporary artist. Her work has been exhibited in the US and in Europe and she has taken part in artist residencies in Grimma, Germany, Cali, Colombia, and Taos, New Mexico. She has won multiple grants, including the Arts Council England Grant, and her work can be found in public and private collections in the US, UK, and Hong Kong. She has had solo and two person exhibitions in New York City, London, Wrocław, Poland and Bristol, England, among other cities. Born in 1984, Jacobs was raised in Littlestown, Pennsylvania. She was educated in Art History at Gettysburg College and received her MFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore in 2010. There she studied under Joyce Kozloff and Timothy App. Jacobs moved back to the USA in 2014 after 3 years living in London and Bristol, UK where she became a naturalized British citizen.
