Sarah Olson
Morning Vine

2017

About the Item

Morning Vine, 2017, oil on traditional gesso primed canvas mounted on wood panel with incised line drawing, 54 x 40 inches Morning Vine is painted on a traditional gesso primed surface (made from rabbit skin glue, marble dust and titanium white pigment). Olson employs this classical priming technique to create an incredibly smooth marble-like surface that lends itself to the lush layers of oil paint as well as the varied incised line drawing which she carves directly into the surface of each piece. In this painting, Olson takes her amalgamated figures deep into the sea and just above the surface. In Morning Vine, a cloudy bird form eats bugs, berries and fetal shaped pods off a vine that swings impossibly above a dawning sea. Olson speculates with this and other paintings what might have happened if birds got the upper hand with evolution and humans were left behind with insects and larvae. Sarah Olson explores the beginning of life and the creation of the world through the lens of religion and science. She has exhibited paintings, drawings and created performances and sculptural installations in New York City and abroad in various galleries, public spaces and on residencies in remote locations in India, Scotland, England and El Salvador. While working within traditional drawing and painting media, she also incorporates plastic waste into her images and performances such as bags, bottles, lids, six-pack rings; questioning the constant stream of garbage that piles ever higher as populations soar. A live video of her work most recently was displayed this August at Summer Stage in Central Park during a performance by vocalist, Tamar-Kali. Her sculpture and painting have recently been displayed at Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum in New York City. Her work as also been shown at DA Gallery, Gallery Satori, The Dahesh Museum, Columbia University in New York City; and the Rivington Gallery and Museum of Design in London, among others. She has created performances for the Joyce Theater, Littlefield Performance and Art Space, and the Education Alliance in New York City. Her work is in the collections of Bruce W. Ferguson, Eric Fischl and Eileen Guggenheim. Olson lives and works in Brooklyn with her husband and three children. She holds an MFA from the New York Academy of Art and a BFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Parting (pet dog, bulldog, cowboy, animal portrait art, surrealist oil painting)
By Rudolf Kosow
Located in Quebec, Quebec
"Parting," a surrealistic painting by Rudolf Kosow, masterfully employs scale to create a poignant narrative of farewell. The canvas is dominated by the face of a bulldog, each hair and whisker intricately detailed, exuding a warmth and expressiveness that captures the essence of the breed. The bulldog's large, soulful eye, reflecting a quiet resignation, suggests an awareness of an impending separation. Perched thoughtfully on the dog's snout, a diminutive figure of a man wearing a cowboy hat sits, his posture one of contemplative sorrow. The man dangles his legs over the edge of the snout, a symbol of the precipice between companionship and the solitude of parting. Kosow's work deeply explores the themes of connection and departure. The intimate positioning of the man against the vastness of the dog's facial landscape evokes the shared history and emotional bond between human and animal. The painting's title, "Parting," may imply an imminent physical separation, yet the closeness of the two subjects suggests an unbreakable emotional tie that distance cannot sever. In this piece, Kosow invites the viewer to consider the bittersweet moments of goodbye that are an intrinsic part of life's journey, highlighting the enduring nature of love that remains through any farewell. "Parting" is a testament to the poignant beauty found in the strength of connections that transcend the constraints of size and species. keywords; painting on canvas, surrealist painting, animal vs human, americana, nature, man, man vs nature, surrealism, giant animal...

By Rudolf Kosow
Located in Quebec, Quebec
"Cuddly Snout" by Rudolf Kosow is a stirring piece that captures the tender relationship between a human and an animal, portrayed through the striking close-up of a pet dog's snout, with a person resting peacefully against it. The animal's facial features are rendered with exquisite attention to texture and detail, each whisker and patch of fur beautifully accentuated. The small figure of the person, leaning with an air of contented ease against the snout, is a testament to the comfort and solace that animals provide. This closeness conveys a shared moment of rest, an unspoken bond of trust and affection that needs no words. The artwork’s title, "Cuddly Snout," encapsulates the warmth and gentle nature of this interaction, highlighting the simple, pure connections that form between the hearts of humans and animals. Kosow’s work invites us to reflect on the soft, quiet moments that we cherish with our pets, those times of closeness that bring us joy and comfort. It’s a visual homage to the silent, heartfelt communication that deepens our bonds with the animal companions who grace our lives.
