Sarah Olson
Underwater Lake

About the Item

oil on wood panel, 16"x20" signed on reverse Sarah Olson explores the beginning of life and the creation of the world through the lens of religion and science. She has exhibited paintings, drawings and created performances and sculptural installations in New York City and abroad in various galleries, public spaces and on residencies in remote locations in India, Scotland, England and El Salvador. While working within traditional drawing and painting media, she also incorporates plastic waste into her images and performances such as bags, bottles, lids, six-pack rings; questioning the constant stream of garbage that piles ever higher as populations soar. A live video of her work was displayed last August at summer stage during a performance by vocalist, Tamar-Kali. Her sculpture and painting have recently been displayed at Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum. Her work has shown at DA Gallery, Gallery Satori, The Dahesh Museum, Columbia University in New York City; and the Rivington Gallery and Museum of Design in London, among others. She has created performances for the Joyce Theater, Littlefield Performance and Art Space, and The Education Alliance in New York City and in collaboration with musicians, choreographers and composers. Her work is in the collections of Bruce W. Ferguson, Eric Fischl and Eileen Guggenheim. Olson lives and works in Brooklyn with her husband and three children. She holds an MFA from the New York Academy of Art and a BFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

The Masque of Comus
Located in Atlanta, GA
"My work principally consists of deeply abstracted figure compositions--intuitive constructions that begin with random marks establishing larger masses of torsos, heads, and limbs in an undefined setting. The emphasis is almost purely on intuition. The figures are born of their surrounding environment, emerging only partially and fugitively from the layers of pigment. A narrative is evident but never overt. A crown, a shield, a boat, a wheel. Though the subject has recently coalesced around my reading of Dante and Shakespeare, the settings remain extremely vague- a beach, an interior, a woodland. The paintings are, in the end, meditations on the relationship between the protagonists in a wordless drama. In my paintings, I use a cold wax medium combined with dry pigments, oil paint, and embedded fragments of burlap. The surfaces eventually build up into a dense, rugged terrain." --Thaddeus Radell
