About the Item
This is the point at which Hamlet concentrates all of his resentment and breaks through his earlier hesitation to finally run his poisoned blade through Claudius and avenge his family. For the subject, I found my friend Jackson to be an ideal candidate. His body language and facial expressions are often lively, and his persona leaves a unique impression on anybody. His commitment to my idea was sealed when he showed up on the day of the shoot and took out a raw onion and cut it fresh then proceeded to vigorously rub it into his eyes as if trying to unsee or erase an unsightly vision.

Whenever loading my brush with paint, I never aim for definite realism, but rather want to give the appearance of reality: to shoot beyond the natural, but not outside nature. Whether it’s executed under cold-blooded compulsion or rigged discreetly over a few weeks, etched with repetitious marks or daintily applied through slow-burned sfumato, all my works tend to focus on the silhouette of man – the most noble subject for art, in my eyes. I then remind myself that I can’t truly see further than what I already know. Every work is just one step toward further broadening my horizon of human understanding. So, I make and stack myself wooden blank slates like ammunition and let my scrutiny spill onto them and wrap and coil whichever way it sees fit, like a grapevine without a brace, and recall that which keeps me coming back: that intoxicating feeling of raw creation and letting the sensation wash over me in an awesome wave.

Horror films are the most profound and visceral of films, garnering the most extreme responses: vehement hatred and cultish admiration. Horror elicits a controlled neurosis while exposing the rejected weaknesses and brutalities of humanity. I embrace the power of cinema and its ability to alter perception, as it is media that is a reflection of our primordial desires. I’m fascinated by concepts involving the limits of human perception, the ambiguity of morality in relation to nature, the paradoxical nature of reality, and the human struggle to reckon with uncertainty. Humans bear the burden of being as we are, all caught in a flux of unbelievable cognitive abilities and animalistic instincts. Every painting is in its own universe and I cater to it. Nothing is precious. Chaos is embraced.

This figure of St. Sebastian has long been a favorite subjects for artists. In this modern interpretation we see St. Sebastian shackled in chains and leather restraints against an industrial graffiti covered wall. He gazes upwards while his body is pummeled with rubber suction cup darts. Historical references are ripe for interpretation in this painting. St. Sebastian is known as the patron saint for athletes, soldiers and warriors. He is said to have survived his initial wounds from arrows by way of divine intervention only to be beaten to death later after warning the emperor of his sins. St. Sebastian is known to be a protector from plague.
