About the Item

When you look at this painting ''Cherry Blossom" by Dutch artist Sasja Wagenaar (1959) from a distance you see a perfectly painted image, but up close a generous paint streak is visible. She has a unique way of applying shadow and light effects in her paintings. Sasja Wagenaar is inspired by our classic masters from the seventeenth century, a flourishing period in Dutch painting. The century in which new continents, markets and arts were discovered. At that time in the Netherlands it was a real fad to collect chinoiserie. Originally porcelain, but also Dutch pottery, also known as Delft blue, inspired by Chinese and especially by Japanese bowls and vases. For Sasja, a still life - or, as it is called in the literature: Nature Morte - is not death, but life. She paints life caught in tranquility. The blossoming branches, the joy of the living flowers with their intense beauty from the various seasons continue to inspire her. They are not dead but alive, captured by her and painted on the destruction of the blossom. It is about the future, about life, about beauty and lasting pleasure. Peace and reflection in a hectic time. To quote Sasja Wagenaar: ‘Every platter, every bowl is already so much in itself. They were made with great care and went through hundreds of hands before they ended up here. Their character must be respected in composing the story that forms a still life'. Although rooted in the 17th century Dutch tradition, her work shows her very own signature and is contemporary. As a true Modern Dutch Master Sasja knows how to nourish silence and well-being in extraordinarily serene compositions. She paints 'living' models, she doesn’t use photography and she uses acrylic, which is also a reference to our time. She creates a composition of the fruit or flowers in her studio and combines it with bowls or dishes that match the subject. This process is very inspiring and fascinating. This gives her the opportunity to paint the same still life in her own studio in different daylight and light incidence. That is surprising to see. The same composition from a different angle with different light shows us again that a still life is vital. She signs every painting with a beautiful ‘W’, always aware of the strive that the next work will hopefully be even closer to her absolute ideal. The ideal, the motor one has to lead a meaningful life, for Sasja Wagenaar, is the painting of tomorrow.
