About the Item
"Reflection In Sun Ray Motley" from Sax Berlin forms part of his latest collection of works on the Harlequin theme. Although the character dates back to 11th Century passion plays this Harlequin invokes the character we now know well since it's first 16th Century appearance by Tristano Martinelli in Paris in 1584.
In this work the theme of the piece is refection, the portrait being a projection of the reflection. His face almost subsumed by the brilliant colours of his stage persona. This is a thought provoking piece as well as being a colourful work and is another example of Berlin's mastery of his theme. As usual the artist has used original pigments that he has prepared in his studio.
