About the Item

This colorful portrait work features hues of green, blue, gold and red. This piece is framed in a painted wooden frame measuring 29.5 by 23.5 inches. New Orleans native, Athens-based artist, Shelby Little, creates paintings as a form of visual storytelling with hidden narratives that unfold throughout her process. Weaving together inspiration from memories, dreams, and her surroundings, she creates a personal mythos, allowing her characters to reveal themselves at their own pace. Her works explore the cyclical nature of time, mortality, the afterlife, the thin line between order and chaos, and the seemingly inherent duality in all things. Shelby’s characters in the nearly endless versions of Greco-Roman myths are used as reference points to reflect these themes. Her portraiture is both familiar and unexpected, using a bold palette that is simultaneously contemporary and ancient, alluding to the painted colors of Archaic Greek sculpture. Shelby’s paintings are otherworldly, giving them a feeling of cheerful imagination with an underlying darkness. Shelby graduated from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts in 2009. After studying at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston for a year and spending an exchange semester at Queens College in New York, Shelby returned home where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of New Orleans in 2014. She moved to Athens, Georgia, in 2022 where she now lives and works.
