About the Item

Romantic, Pre-Raphaelite painting titled 'Cinderella', this oil on canvas painting is in the Victorian period after a painting by Sir John Everett Millais noted to be in the collection of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, famed for writing and producing world famous musicals such as 'Cats', 'Les Miserables' and 'Phantom of the Opera'. This charming painting has a bit of theatre in it with beautiful Cinderella looking out from her place by the cinders with her broom and a whimsical peacock feather in her lap. Webber's Cinderella dates to 1881 by Sir John Everett Millais (1829-1896), a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in London. The Pre-Raphaelites were a group of artists known for choosing literary subjects in jewel-like colors, with attention to detail, and a penchant toward symbolism. In this painting we see the Pre-Raphaelite characteristics of a recognizable fairy tale literary figure with bold color in her auburn flowing hair, green dress and red cap, holding a peacock feather. The peacock feather foretells Cinderella's story, symbolizing beauty and grace, elegance and wealth, renewal and even royalty. Millais was a precocious artist, exhibiting at age nine and joining the Royal Academy School at age 11, the youngest pupil ever. He painted Cinderella when he was 52, a well established artist and leading Pre-Raphaelite member. Cinderella was painted with help from a 12-13 year old girl who sat as a young model for Millais, Miss Beatrice Buckstone, the lovely daughter of a comedian in the theatre. There is an outline of the bellows hanging on the wall opposite Cinderella, signifying her association with the cinders of the fireplace that she keeps warm. A glow of firelight outlines her dress. She holds a broom. In this painting we see only a closer view of the girl herself. She is a mirror reflection of the famous Millais painting, facing left rather than facing right. A photo in this listing is of the actual Millais painting, with the same model seated on a stool on the left side facing right, her bare feet on the ground. This painting has no signature. The model is seated but there is no detail of a stool or chair beneath her. This work is incomplete; a study of the girl but not a complete painting. The work is set in a frame and canvas that has the characteristics of the 19th century, so in the period of the famous painting by Millais in 1881. The canvas shows age, prepared by Winsor & Newton Limited, printed on the back. . Could it be a study of the girl, by Millais, without the background detail that would appear in the final work? In research, it is noted that Millais painted meticulous studies prior to painting his finished work. He paid great attention to detail, sometimes painting different angles in different light before deciding his final work. In this painting we see Miss Buckhorn facing opposite her image in the completed painting; a different angle. The emphasis is on the subject, her face, hair, posture, dress, her hand placement, broom and peacock feather. The light falls on the folds of her dress. Painting the main subject, without her stool, at a different angle, does suggest a study rather than a copy. Unsigned facing opposite and only one area of the finished work would also be consistent with a study rather than a copy. Still lovely and worth framing and keeping for more than 100 years. As such after research, this possibility is compared with a Christie’s sale. As a comparable sale, Christie’s sold an early (19th century) reproduction of Millais’ famed work Ophelia for 10,000 GBP (equivalent $15,000) in 2008. If this painting were to be confirmed as a study by Millais the value would certainly he higher. It s of a similar vintage as the original. This is not an attempt to copy the full painting, or copy in mirror image. Pricing now reflects a price below the Christie’s sale of a vintage copy, and above a fragmented copy, as the provenance has not been proved. Original works by Millais have achieved hundreds of thousands of pounds at auction, indeed two to three million dollars for his finest work. Millais’s work is represented in the Tate Britain that has the famed Ophelia, and other works by Millais. Millais’s work is in the collections of numerous museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Victoria and Albert, National Gallery of Art and the Kelvingrove in Glasgow to name a few. Millais moved toward realism in later life, including portraits and landscapes, particularly Scottish landscapes in Perthshire. In his personal life he and his wife Effie (a subject of a portrait herself) had eight children and the need to support them may have influenced his change to more popular and lucrative art forms. In his Pre-Raphaelite days he painted various literary figures. Among his many Pre-Raphaelite works are Little Red Riding Hood, Joan of Arc and Shakespeare’s Mariana and Ophelia. This painting is about 27" high and 19" wide. In the frame it is 34" by 27". The frame is wood with gilt. It may not be original but has age and signs of wear. The stretcher bar has age consistent with the 19th century, and with a vintage marked original canvas, unlined. There has been minor retouching visible under UV light and center stretcher marks are visible. Otherwise it appears to be in very good vintage condition. Provenance is from a private collection in England, imported to the United States by the Gallerie in 2025. Previously offered and SOLD on First Dibs but the buyer did not complete the sale. Now offered with additional research and background that connects this painting with the times and a known practice by the artist of rendering meticulous studies prior to completing a full painting. At the very least, this is a charming vintage original hand-painted oil on canvas work of Millais's Cinderella, Miss Beatrice Buckstone. Enjoy!

Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), this painting was acquired by Saltire Gallerie with a larger painting signed by Hulk the Younger, (just SOLD). Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky. Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year. Hulk is the son of a well known Dutch maritime...
