The main themes of Sylwester Stabryla’s creations are private scenes that create determined series, for example: “From the history of a submarine”, “Big boys”, “Kitchen stories”, ”Before the storm”. The main character of these cycles is a human in his intimate situations. He is embedded in the symbolism of small, simple things of everyday life, in his specific poses, gestures, structures, all leading towards creating individualism of a single person, with his or her fears, feelings of alienation, loneliness and the passage of time. The artist uses the language of realistic expression, and the main motif in his work is a human. But this is not strictly figurative painting in its academic meaning because the design presented by Stabryła is like a breeze of fresh air, making it stand out against other, similar ones, and is attractive to the modern audience. On one hand it is realism, on the other hand, you can notice it has been inspired by surrealism, photography, sometimes neo-figurative composition and deconstruction. At first glance, the artist’s painting seems to be personal and intimate, yet uses plenty of iconography and themes that evolved in earlier periods of the art. Its features include intimate character and specific composition like film or photographic stills. But human is most important here although it is not treated as a human figure or simply a portrayed model. The man in Stabryla’s painting is material and real, full of emotions that plague him. As in the psychological portrait, here is an example of a complex psychological analysis of personality, which has a lasting effect on the recipient.
Sylwester Stabryła is a contemporary Polish artist of a young generation from Sanok. He has taken part in many individual and collective exhibitions in Prague, Berlin, London, Warsaw and many Polish cities. He cooperates with art galleries and auction houses like Christie’s in London. His figurative painting attracts a great deal of attention from critics and collectors both in Poland and worldwide.
