About the Item
Late 20th century abstract expressionist oil on board representation of a lively jazz night by French artist, Thierry Miramon, signed top left and presented in contemporary black tray frame.
A wonderfully vibrant and humorous painting in an abstract expressionist style.
Thierry Miramon was born in Marseille in 1965 and died in 2019. His paintings were widely exhibited including in the USA, Mexico and Africa.
Thierry learned his art at first from his father who was an amateur artist inspired by figurative art.
At the age of 5 he won 1st prize in the Provence region for his art.
After passing the baccalauréat Miramon he took time out to travel the world and made ends meet by working different jobs. He was excited by escaping the superficial and living amongst the locals wherever he was. He journeyed far and wide from the age of 19 to 26.
This self taught artist was greatly inspired by Toulouse LAUTREC, Claude MONET and Edgar DEGAS who influenced his work and led him towards painting scenes from daily life.
Thierry painted his subjects with infinite tenderness and great sensitivity which draws us into the image and enchants us.
His use of colour is lively and bright/intense and the style of painting is instantly recognizable once seen for the first time. His work is distinguishable by its broken lines and his layering of levels. You can even pick up the influence of cubism from his work.
Thierry's work took off during his 30s when he was taken under the wing of Marc STAMMEGNA a talented gallerist. Thierry was very flexible as an artist and worked in pottery, painted on numerous objects and also created comic strips. The Marseille opera commissioned him to create various posters and some record labels bear his designs too.
Thierry himself said that he has no idea what he was going to paint and let himself be guided by his paintbrush and his intuition, as PICASSO said " when I know what I should do, I don't do it"
Thierry was most happy when he made people laugh or giggle or react in some way to his art even if just for a second.
He is well known for painting Marseille warts and all, especially the lesser seen sights of everyday life.
