About the Item
This large scale oil painting depicts a black bear in a domestic setting, with the bear walking across a grey sectional couch with a book in its mouth. A redbreasted songbird sits in the foreground amongst large stones and rocks, with a collection of sticks and branches laid on the couch cushions. A designer sputnik chandelier completes the living room with a small side table with another stack of books, tea cup and saucer and a small plant.
Expertly rendered with great detail, this contemporary surrealist wildlife painting explores themes of literacy, animal habitats and the line between man and nature.
Thomas Broadbent explores the coexistence of nature and human environments, depicting animals among the everyday relics of human life. His compositions offer poignant and poetic meditations on our evolving relationship with the natural envi-
ronment.
Broadbent’s style balances scientific observation with a contemporary reinterpretation of the symbolism found in 17th-century Dutch still life painting. In his stage-like scenarios, he approaches his subjects with the detailed eye of a naturalist and the insight of a social philosopher. Through meticulous rendering and unexpected juxtapositions, he encourages reflection on the fragility of human dominance and the persistent agency of the natural world.
Broadbent has exhibited extensively across the United States and internationally. His accolades include the Pulse Prize at Pulse Art Fair and inclusion in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Wildlife Art. His nine-foot-long Lunar Mosaic was acquired by the U.S. State Department’s Art in Embassies program and is currently displayed at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. Broadbent’s solo exhibitions have been held at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Croxhapox Gallery (Belgium), Inspace Gallery (China), and others. His work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The Brooklyn Rail, NY Arts, and more. Thomas Broadbent is represented by the Front Room Gallery.

Thomas Broadbent
Thomas Broadbent is well known for his contemporary naturalistic depictions of the intersection of nature and man. Thomas Broadbent has shown extensively throughout the U.S. as well as internationally. Broadbent’s work won the PULSE Prize for best solo booth at PULSE Art Fair. His work was subsequently featured in “Mission to Space” at the Children's Museum of Manhattan. His work is in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Broadbent’s numerous solo exhibitions include the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Croxhapox Art Gallery in Gent, Belgium, The Voorkamer Gallery in Lier, Belgium, Inspace gallery in Beijing, China and the Newark Arts Council. Broadbent’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The Star-Ledger, New Jersey, NY Arts Magazine, The Brooklyn Rail and numerous other publications.
