Tina Orsolic Dalessio
"Chrysalis" oil painting, self portrait, realist meets art nouveau, yellow flora

2025

About the Item

"Chrysalis" is a contemporary oil painting on canvas. Orsolic is known for her melodic landscapes and precise attention to detail, however, in this painting, she branches away from realism and into abstraction, using the colors and shapes to abstract the scene. A woman, the artist's self-insert, blends into an array of vines and flowers, encased in her cloak, she dons a peaceful, meditative expression as she is absorbed by the foliage around her. The artist says about this piece: "The final self-portrait in this series reflects on a fortuitous artistic expansion over the past year. It celebrates the everlasting metamorphosis and expresses gratitude for fertile grounds for artistic growth and transformation… always into a version of Self closer to the creative source. In this painting, I am slowly emerging from a transitional state and into a version more free and more in tune with my ever-evolving self." Tina Orsolic Dalessio is a figurative painter born and raised in Zagreb, Croatia. She graduated from Florence Academy of Art in June 2018. She also holds a bachelor’s degree from University of Zagreb Law School, LL.M. degree from the University of Michigan Law School and a PhD degree from the University of Maastricht, Faculty of Law. Before becoming a painter, she worked as a lecturer and researcher in law, specializing in philosophy of law and European Union law. Alongside her husband Marc Dalessio, she discovered her passion for fine arts, which lead her to a life changing decision to leave academia and devote herself fully to painting. After being accepted into the presitigious BP Portrait Award exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London, The Poet by Tina Orsolic Dalessio won the Visitor's Choice Award. Artist Statement: In my opinion, art, perhaps more than any other social phenomenon, best reflects the shifting tides of human consciousness. So, being involved in arts, and more particularly, being a part of the artistic movement that, at its core entails a careful observation, admiration and respect of the natural world around us, gives me a strong sense of purpose and hope. This reemerging naturalistic movement that I consider myself a part of, rests on humility and acknowledgement of how precious, beautiful and fragile our world is. As an artist who considers it her mission to inhale the beauty that surrounds her, and exhale it as art, I hope to gently remind others of that same truth regarding the miracle and delicacy of human condition. And in doing that, I hope to become a small drop in the river of thought pointing to the more general shift of human consciousness towards a deep respect for our Mother Nature. For we all are, in every aspect of our existence, intrinsically tied to it.

Portrait of Christina Patterson, 5 Years Old
By Aaron Shikler
Located in Milford, NH
A fine portrait of a 5 year old Christina Patterson by American artist Aaron Abraham Shikler (1922-2015). Shikler was born in Brooklyn, New York, studied at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, then studied in New York with the abstract painter Hans Hofmann, but he remained a committed realist throughout his life, under the sway of artists like Degas, Vuillard, Sickert and Sargent. To make a living, he painted clowns and ballerinas for a wholesale company, signing the work “Phil I. Steen” to register his disgust. When Leroy Davis, an Army friend, opened the Davis Gallery in Manhattan in 1953, he began showing Mr. Shikler’s work, which included figure studies, still lifes and landscapes. A turning point came in 1959 when Jane Engelhard...
