About the Item

Tomasz Kołodziejczyk was born in 1976 in Stettin (Szczecin). From 1997 to 2003 he studied at the Painting and Graphics Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Danzig (Gdańsk). In 2003 he graduated with honours in the studio of Prof. Mieczysław Olszewski. He lives and works in Danzig. He is occupied with painting, drawing and mural painting. His works are collected in Poland and abroad. A stipendist of the Ministry of Culture of 2001/2002. He paints marine, port themes, which he approaches in a synthetic manner. As he claims himself, they are means making it easier to express some kind of his aesthetic need, evoke unusual atmosphere, emotions, play with light shades. This sophisticated, minimal painting brings a surge of relief from the surrounding hustle and bustle. He comes from Pomerania. He defines sky blue through all the possible shades. He disciplines the element unloosing the mighty skies in water. However, he does not look for poetry in the sea. He admits he studies it through the abstract angle. Most frequently from the perspective of an average landlubber: ‘I come from Stettin but in the course of my studies I moved to Danzig and stayed there from then on. I like the city. Mangled by canals, rivers, anchored between the bay and the sea, its landscape being painted by water. I’m engrossed in homeland themes, old rusty keelboats, small ports on the Vistula River, lone piers and jetties. I often savour the views, setting off for walking or biking trips. I paint water from my perspective – of a safe, commonplace marina. I have discovered that one can behold the sea in various ways, having found there a whole spectrum of colour shades, from a dark, almost pitch black navy blue to a bright green, on the brink of yellow. And I keep on looking for something new. I look at the surface of water in purely abstract manner. Marine, port subjects are only means to express a certain aesthetic urge, create a particular atmosphere, play with light shades, The characters, provided they appear in my paintings, are secondary, though never neglected in terms of technique. I devote much work there, object proportions have to be kept, but I lack remorse if I need to reduce them for the sake of the technical aspect. If they don’t fit the concept, I kind of ’merge’ them with either the sky or water. I have begun to aim at synthesis. Why? Because it allows to grasp the important elements better and get rid of the irrelevant ones. Recently I have even started a new cycle of works where insignificant objects become the silent characters of a painting. My painting, a bit like myself, is in a way minimal, straightforward , meditative and honest. I’m tired of the chaos of contemporary life. I feel I need to restrain, reduce and simplify this turmoil. Peace and quiet of my works is something I’m consciously aiming at. The natural force of water is submerged in my paintings. It’s my answer to the uproar that surrounds us. I believe myself to be a classical painter in a way as I dwelve in the composition, quality, colour. Intuitively, I stick to the golden ratio and try to encase particular elements of a painting to make it credible. The world I depict is imagined to a degree, these are not genuine places as such. I assemble my pieces of reality like puzzles to transform them later on
