About the Item
CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE is an acrylic on canvas surrealist painting by Brooklyn, New York artist Tony Geiger. It measures 36x48" and is a unique artwork. Note the temporal collision between the Victorian woman and the contemporary Jaguar hood ornament she's laboring under, the unifying blue of the woman's garment and the hood ornament, yet the opposite direction of each. The landscape is interesting too – the creamy golden clouds and sky on the verge of an epiphany, the land itself barren and vast promising nothing.
From Tony Geiger – "The Jaguar hood ornament makes an appearance here. In this case, I wanted to play the repressed and conservative world of a Victorian woman against the modern, sexy world of a Jaguar automobile.
Here the 19th-century woman crawls across a barren landscape with the cat strapped on her back. What debt does she owe to this amulet?"
Tony Geiger has said his paintings take you to a certain place, but you have to find your own way back. The world he creates encompasses both classical surrealism and more contemporary concerns. Conflict is usually present. These mischievous juxtapositions make statements on the human condition – either politically, physically or spiritually. Geiger wants the viewer to be challenged and amused by this mixture of the macabre and the playful.
A graduate of the School of Visual Arts, New York and a longtime NYC resident, Tony Geiger still considers himself a transplanted Californian. He has exhibited paintings at the Sideshow Gallery in Williamsburg, the Barbican Centre in London, England, Miami Projects at Art Basel, Ceres Gallery in Chelsea, NYC, and was accepted into The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program. Tony Geiger lives in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn with his studio nearby in Gowanus.
