About the Item
TO THE INFIRMARY is a new oil on linen surrealist painting by Brooklyn, New York artist Tony Geiger. It measures 22x28" and is a unique artwork. A tour de force by Geiger, this painting features his trademark juxtapositions of histories and symbols – the woman in late 19th century clothes marches purposefully along the path with a giant cricket or cicada on her back, the insect has been pierced by five arrows (to silence it? or a sacrifice?) – in the heavens are (left) Saint Catherine of Siena, and (right) Saint Gaetano da Thiene (after Tiepolo).
Saint Catherine of Siena was a 14th-century mystic of the Dominican Order. Her writings are still held in high regard by the Catholic church (notably, that "God sees you always"). She was decapitated in 1380, at 33 years old. Saint Gaetano da Thiene was a 15th-century philosopher who espoused the immortality of the soul.

The bonnet-wearing woman is purposefully rushing down a red earthen road, surrounded by otherworldly vegetation. Will she get the wounded creature to the infirmary on time? This tableau is kicked into dramatic overdrive with the appearance of two Tiepolo Saints in the sky."
Tony Geiger has said his paintings take you to a certain place, but you have to find your own way back. The world he creates encompasses both classical surrealism and more contemporary concerns. Conflict is usually present. These mischievous juxtapositions make statements on the human condition – either politically, physically or spiritually. Geiger wants the viewer to be challenged and amused by this mixture of the macabre and the playful.
A graduate of the School of Visual Arts, New York and a longtime NYC resident, Tony Geiger still considers himself a transplanted Californian. He has exhibited paintings at the Sideshow Gallery in Williamsburg, the Barbican Centre in London, England, Miami Projects at Art Basel, Ceres Gallery in Chelsea, NYC, and he was accepted into The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program. Tony Geiger lives in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn with his studio nearby in Gowanus.
